Surles Passes In Jeffersontown at 73 Mrs. Lula Blankenbaker Surles, wife of S.R. Surles of Jeffersontown, in her seventy-third year, passed away at her home Monday night at 6:30 after an illness of several months. Althougoh having been in poor health for some time, Mrs. Surles had been confined to her bed only two or three days and her death came without warning. A great sufferer at times, hypodermica were administered, and it was while in a restful sleep under the influence of medicines that the spirit quietly departed. Mrs. Surles, when in health, had been at active worker in the Jeffersontown Baptist Church nd a teacher in the Sunday School. An artist of no mean ability she had done china painting and landscape work to a considerable exent. Also her love of the beautiful displayed itself in her ability to grow flowers and to arrange them artistically when in blossom; and many were the prizes she won at fairs and flower shows on her displays, both of single specimens and her tasteful arrangements of bouquets. Twice married, Mrs. Surles first husband was Wiliam L. Hite, who died more than forty years ago. By this husband she reared an only child, a son, who also prceded his mother to the grave, leaving the three grandchildren of Mrs. Surles, Cuthbert, Helen and Louise Hite, whose home is in Dayton Ohio. Other survivors besides the second husband, are three brothers, Sam H. Blankenbaker, Harry Blankenbaker and Sidney Blankenbaker, all living in Jefferson County, in which all of Mrs. Surles' life had been spent. The furneral was conducted from the home Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 by her pastor, Rev. L.T. Wright, and burial was in Jeffersontown Cemetery.
