Charles Davis was born October 22, 1758 in Spotsylvania, County, Virginia on a plantation of over 400 acres called, "Broadfield", probably in Berkley Parish. He was next to the youngest in age of his ten brothers and sisters, two of which had died young. He was the son of James Conway Davis and Mary Elizabeth (Carter) Davis of Spotsylvania County. He was tutored by Mr. Winslow as was all his brothers and sisters. They lived in a two story home with wooden dormers and part brick or stone exterior. Charles had entered into a trade as an apprentice under a man named Carter, probably working with leather, perhaps saddlemaking. When the American Revolution started Charles enlisted in the Virginia Continental Line as a soldier and successfully completed his enlistment. After he was discharged he joined the light horse unit under Col White. He was serving in North Carolina about 25 miles north of George Town on the Sandee River when they engaged British Grenadiers and was seriously wounded; his left arm cut so deep as to be close to having been severed. He lost the use of many or most of the muscles needed for use of his left hand. He was unable to complete his enlistment with the light horse and "repaired" to Culpepper Co. VA to try to recover and heal. He married Hannah Gaines there in 1783 and had received a pension from the State of Virginia in recognition of his war service. He moved his family to Jessamine County, Kentucky in 1796, near the county line with Woodford County, KY where his younger brother Thomas W Davis and family lived by Sinking Creek. Charles E Davis died in Jessamine County in 1807 by his widow's statement. His son James B Davis, born 1785, moved to Cass County, Illinois in 1835. I do not know how long Hannah his widow and the four other children lived there. Charles and Hannah Davis children were Elizabeth Davis, James B Davis, Nancy Davis, Polly Davis and Sarah Davis. Elizabeth Davis married Samuel White, James B Davis married Elizabeth Hawkins, Nancy Davis married William White and had dau. Mary White who married James Lewis, Polly Davis married Heartwell Heath, and Sarah (Sally) Davis married Hickman Kersey. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/kyfiles/
