Surname: Leathers, Rich Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 7th ed., 1887, Kenton Co. JOHN LEATHERS, a native of Kenton County, Ky., was born five miles south of Covington, July 12, 1842, and is the third child born to John W. and Elizabeth Leathers, natives of Kenton and Boone Counties, respectively. The paternal grandfather of our subject was born on the same farm, which farm has been in this family over 100 years; he was a colonel in the war of 1812, and was a son of John Leathers, a native of Virginia, who was a very early settler in Kenton County. John W. Leathers, the father of our subject, represented Kenton in the State Legislature four times, his last service being in 1868; he was a farmer by occupation. Our subject was reared on the farm, and educated in the common schools. In October, 1862, he volunteered in the Confederate service, and served about four months under Gen. Heath. In October, 1863, he married Miss Kate Rich, daughter of Samuel Rich, a farmer of Kenton County, and three children have been born to their union: John W., Rosa and Bessie. In 1880 Mr. Leathers was elected on the Democratic ticket as sheriff, and was re-elected in 1882 without opposition, serving until 1885. June 16, 1886, he was appointed Government storekeeper in the Sixth District. He is a member of the I.O.O.F., a Democrat and a Baptist. ===============================================================================================
