OXLEY, a stave dealer who resides at Independence, Ky., was born in Boone County, Mo., September 21, 1834, and is a son of Clare Oxley and Philadelphia Oliver, both of whom were natives of Virginia. Our subject was brought up in Weston, Mo., in early life followed stock trading, afterward engaged in the real estate business in Cincinnati in 1857, and was thus engaged there until 1860 when he went to Louisville and engaged in the drug business there until the outbreak of the war when he took a contract from the Government to furnish beef to the army, which contract he held until the close of the war. He then engaged in his present business, and has followed the same ever since. He moved to Independence in 1867, and has a fine farm of 300 acres. In 1867 he married Margaret J. West, a daughter of Moses and Mary A. (Higgins) West, of Kenton County, Ky. To this union two children has been born: Robert F. and Mary E. He is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. Politically he is a Democrat.
