He was born December 14, 1939 in Knott County KY, the son of Cordia Hall Bates and Joe Bates. He is survived by five brothers: Alonzo Bates of Portsmouth, OH., Rosco (Helen) Bates of Dearborn, MI., Homer (Betty) Bates of Warren, MI., Franklin D. Bates and Denver Bates both of Pinetop, KY., five sisters: Opal Fontanilla of Minnesota, Monnie Pratt of Yorktown, VA., Millie Rose (Doug) Yonts of Pinetop, KY., Mazie (Jackie) Bentley of Virginia and Victoria (Harold) Nickles of Pinetop, KY. He was preceded in death by his father, one brother: Winford Bates, and two sisters: Louise Picardel and Katherine Bates. Funeral services were conducted Friday, August 16, 2002 at 2 p.m. at Mallet Fork Old Regular Baptist Church in Pinetop, KY., officiating ministers were Ivan J. Amburgey and Lonnie Sexton.
