AGED LADY KILLED BY AUTO MONDAY NIGHT Mrs. Mary Jane Hammons, whose age was given as 62, was almost instantly killed early Monday night when she was struck by a car while crossing the highway near the Grindstaff farm, three miles south of the city. Driver of the car, Gene Gross, of Harlan, came into the city, according to Night Police Chief Criss McVey. McVey called a highway patrolman and Gross executed bond to await a court hearing. McVey said Gross told him he was enroute to Corbin, with several companions, when the aged woman stepped directly in front of his car. In trying to miss her he swerved into a ditch. The body was removed to the Martin-Swartz Funeral Home and was later taken to the Hammonds home. Funeral services were to be held Wednesday, April 5, at 2 p.m. Interment was in the Grindstaff cemetery. Ms. Hammons is survived by her husband, Sherman Hammons; one daughter, Mrs. Sudie Fisher of Harlan; two sons, Ben Hammons and Charlie Swafford. *************************** USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free genealogical information on the Internet, data may be freely used for personal research and by non-commercial entities as long as this message remains on all copied material.
