Vernon was born to the couple nine months later on September 18, 1916 at Gray, Knox County, Kentucky. David and Nannie also produced Vernon’s brother Theodore Roosevelt Martin who was born on November 11, 1918. Theodore was reported to have perished from meningitis after the first year but the exact date is unknown at this time, and was buried with his father David, at the John Dalton Martin Cemetery (also known as the “Martin Cemetery”), on Arapaho Trail, Harris Road, Gray, Knox, County, Kentucky. Vernon’s widowed mother, the Nannie Martin, married Louis Benjamin Striebel, of Cooper, Kalamazoo County, Michigan on March 24, 1923, in Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio. Nannie and Louis produced a sister for Vernon, Berniece Christine Striebel, who was born on December 15, 1923 at Cleveland.
