A question I asked concerning this photograph concerning my grandfather David 
Rad Martin's rank in this photograph was responded to with:

"He's definitely a private in this photograph as there is no evidence of 
chevrons on his sleeves.  He's wearing the P1902 dress uniform with breast 
cord, which was authorized for all ranks.  The interesting thing is that his 
cap insignia and branch collar insignia appear to be the larger 1902 versions, 
rather than the smaller 1904 patterns.  I believe however, that the larger 
patterns were still worn up until about the time of WWI."  Mr. Kaleb

Additional Comments:
David Rad Martin was born on December 15, 1893.  He was the son of John Dalton 
Martin and Lucy Frances Johnson.  He married Nannette Serena Walters after his 
discharge as a Corporal from the US Army, 3rd Infantry on December 24, 1915 in 
Gray, Knox County, Kentucky. Their children were: Vernon Eugene Martin born on 
September 18, 1916 in Gray, Knox County, KY, and Theodore Roosevelt Martin 
born on November 11,1918 in Gray, Knox County, Kentucky. 

David Rad Martin's syblings, all born in Knox County, Kentucky, were: 

Rachel Ellen MARTIN born September 27, 1891
James Parker "Jim" Martin born January 6, 1896
Charlie Martin born December 15, 1898
Creed Dalton Martin born May 26, 1901
Chester Arthur "C.A." Martin born September 24, 1903
and Samuel A. "Sam" Martin b: June 16, 1906
