Second Death In Aged Group For the second time since February 1, death invaded that group of the Finley family, famed throughout Hopkins county for its longevity, when John Howard Finley expired at his home in the Suthard country at 7:45 Sunday night. James William Finley was the first of four brothers and one sister to die. He entered "eternal sleep" on February 2 at the age of 94. John Howard Finley died at age 89. The survivors are: Mrs Betty Laffoon, Carbondale, 83 years old; George Finley, Madisonville, 87 years old, and Dr. T R Finley, Madisonville, who will be 85 years old in August. John Howard Finley was a prominent farmer accredited with strange curative powers. To a great many people he was known as "Doctor" Finley, and is widely said to have effected cures by the "laying on of hands." He would accept no pay for his services, saying what powers he possessed, if any, came as a Divine gift to be handed on to suffering humanity. He is survived by his widow, Mrs Florence Finley, son, J R Finley, Hopkinsville; three daughters, Mrs A S McWaters, Bruceton, Tenn., Mrs C R Stearsman and Miss Ruth Finley, Dawson Springs rural route 4; and by four grandchildren; Mrs Melvin McKenney, Hopkinsville; Mrs Malcolm Williams, Mrs Magaline McWaters, Bruceton, Tenn., and Miss Mary Sherley Stearsman, Dawson Springs rural route 4. At the request of Mr Finley, there will be no funeral services. Burial will be in Odd Fellows cemetery at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon. The pallbearers will be J C Finley, G B Finley, Garland Finley, James Arthur Finley, Malcolm Williams and Calvin Gill. ------------------------------ From: Nancy Trice Date: Tue, 18 Mar 1997 19:57:53 -0500 Subject: KY-F: RAGSDALE: KY-GA Obituary from the Paducah Sun Democrat, Thursday, December 1, 1977 H.B.
