SYERS Dora Wallace Syers or "Miss Dora" as she was known affectionately to hundreds of Union Countians, was one of the earliest members of the Union County Hospital volunteer program. Then known as Valley View Medical Center, the first organizational meeting for the hospital auxiliary was held February 2, 1984 at the hospital. In viewing one of the early reports of hours worked, Dora Syers' name was in the top five with 570 =BD hours donated. Dora continued this faithful services until November 1995 when her health declined and she no longer felt able to perform her volunteer duties. Her total volunteer hours - 2, 912. She loved to visit the hospital because she wanted to be of service and also because she saw so many of the people who come to know and love her. She applied the same sweet smile, kind and helpful manner to these tasks that she displayed during the 40 years she and John Syers occupied the County Clerk's office in the Union County Court House. Dora was one of the best cooks in Union County. Even though she and John did not have children and she was a "career" woman before this was a popular thing, she loved inviting friends and business associates to her large home on South Morgan Street where the long dining table was impeccably set with china, crystal, silverware, and lovely flower arrangements. And the food, it was exquisite! Each bite you took of a different dish was better than the last. She was not a low fat cook by any means, and nothing pleased her more than for a guest to ask for her recipe. She always remembered and got it to you either before you left or mailed it to you within a few days. Her delicious recipes in her beautiful handwriting are something to cherish. She was also one of those good cooks who could tell you exactly what she did to make the dish special, and if you followed her directions, your dish would be special too. Dora was active in the Morganfield Business & Professional Women's Club and a contribution of cookbook which the group published is dedicated to her. Members of the Union County Methodist Hospital Auxiliary will miss Dora. She was an inspiration and a gracious lady. Sympathy is extended to her nieces and nephews. We love you Dora and will miss you.
