Franks Harvey Sanders, of Crittenden, and Dave T. Franks, of Mt. Zion, both of Grant County, had a quarrel Saturday afternoon at Crittenden over some former trouble. Franks went to his home about three miles away, for his shotgun, and on his return met Sanders in Sechrist's saloon and renewed the quarrel. The barkeeper put them both out and shut the door, when four shots were heard, and going out he found Franks lying dead in the street with a bullet hole behind his left ear. Franks' shotgun and Sanders both disappeared. Franks leaves a wife and six children. Boone County, Ky Recorder, April 6, 1898 Beulah Ann Franks wrfc71a@prodigy.com ------------------------------ From: WRFC71A@prodigy.com (MRS BEULAH A FRANKS) Date: Tue, 20 May 1997 08:37:39, -0500 Subject: KY-F: W. C. Franks Shot A Tragedy At Erlanger Horace Greenwell, an industrious blacksmith of Erlanger, shot and killed his step-father-in-law, W. C. Franks, of Mt. Zion, Grant County, last Thursday afternoon. The shooting was in the Greenwell residence at Erlanger. A few weeks ago Mrs. Greenwell took her two children to Mt. Zion, and leaving them with her mother, Mrs. Franks, she went to Cincinnati where she obtained employment as a domestic. After an absence of several days Greenwell discovered where his wife was located, and visiting her induced her to return home. In a few days they agreed upon terms of a final separation and Mrs. Greenwell went back to Mt. Zion. Last Thursday W. C. Franks accompanied Mrs. Greenwell to Erlanger to assist in the division of the household goods, and during the progress of this business the two men fell out, and William Griffin, Greenwell's brother-in-law, the only eye witness to the tragedy, testified at the coroner's inquest, that Franks had attempted to remove some of the furniture, and when Greenwell remonstrated he became abusive and began striking at Greenwell, who retreated backwards. Franks pursuing and striking him in the face until they reached another room, when Greenwell discovered the door was fastened and he could not get out. At this point he drew his pistol and fired four shots, at the conclusion of which Franks was a corpse. One ball struck Franks in the mouth, and the others in the forehead, right breast and stomach. He says the men were clinched when the firing began. Upon Griffin's evidence the coroner's jury decided that the shooting was done in self-defense and Greenwell, who had surrendered to the proper authorities, was discharged from custody. Friday morning Mrs. Greenwell went before Esq. T. J. Childers and swore out a warrant charging the witness, Griffin, with ben an accessory to the killing of Franks.
