Raised & resided Christian County, became ill last July with typhoid fever which left him deranged. No property but 2 mules. Parents live in Christian Co., but unable to care for him. They are worth $2500 or $3000. He has "a tolerable good education." No other derangement in the family, never married. Is about 25 years old. A farmer, of industrious & steady habits. The supposed cause is in our opinion rivas super induced by an attack of typhoid fever. Wm. STARLING foreman. Francis WEST was sent to Western Lunatic Asylum to be taken care of according to law. Jas. MEACHEM appointed committee for WEST. 1860 Mar 21, 1860, pp. 212-213-- Commonwealth versus MATT a Slave--Burglary. "We of the Jury find the defendant guilty of the charge of Burglary and affix thereto the Penalty of death." John McCARROLL, foreman. April 5, 1860, p.351-- Commonwealth versus MATT-- Judgment set aside & on mo. of J. W. CAMPBELL, owner of Deft. MATT, he's permitted to give bail for the appearance of Deft at next Term in amt. $1000. Sept. 19, 1860, p. 375-- Cmlth vs MATT, Ind. for Burglary. Jury found him guilty-- punishment: 125 stripes. G.B. LONG, foreman. Remanded to jail, Sheriff of Christian Co. to inflict upon him 125 lashes not exceeding 50 on any one day. Sept. 20, 1860, p. 375: Cmlth v. MATT, a slave, indt. for shooting with intent to kill. Prosecution dismissed. Oct. 3, 1860, p. 106-- Eliza Jane HOPSON ag. Jas. S. HOPSON, on petition in equity. Ct ords Plff be divorced from the honor of matrimony with Deft and that she be restored to all the rights & privileges of an unmarried woman & that her original name be restored to her & that she have the care & custody of her children mentioned in the petition & Deft. to pay costs of court. 1861 Mar 22, 1861, p.188: Grand Jury Indictment against NED a Slave for Murder Mar 27 1861, p. 216-- Comlth v. NED, property of J. T. EDWARDS, for Murder. J. T. Edwards' slaves SUFILE, SAIN, WILLIS & SAM to testify for Deft. Sept 16 1861, p. 416-- Tabitha J. MITCHELL vs. Wm. C. MITCHELL: granted divorce and restored to maiden name Tabitha J. BIGGERSTAFF (Deft. a non-resident) p. 431-- Cmlth v. NED, a slave--murder: found guilty [but no sentence recorded here.] 1862 Mar 22, 1862, p.450-- Cmlth v. NED, a man of color & slave, the property of J. T. EDWARDS. Brought to bar in custody of Jailor--guilty-- to be kept in Christian County jail til May 16, 1862 on which day between sunrise & sunset the Sheriff shall hang him by the neck until he is dead. p. 451-- The court being satisfied upon the valuation of J K GANT, K TURYMAN & A N LONG that NED a man of color and slave the property of John T. EDMUNDS this day sentenced to be ex- ecuted upon conviction for the crime of murder is worth the sum of $800 & it is ordered that the said EDMUNDS be & he is hereby allowed that amount out of the Public Treasury which is ordered to be certified to the Auditor of Public Accounts for payment upon the production of the necessary certificate of the Sheriff. 1863 Mar 17, 1863, p. 500-- Comlth v. Rufus BOYD, Iverson B. BOYD, & Tabitha BOYD: allowing Slave to trade as a white man. Heard by jury & dismissed. Mar 20, 1863, p. 523-- Comlth v. MADISON, a slave, property of Dr. Chas SHACKELFORD, for Robbery & Burglary. Found not guilty of Robbery & Burg- lary, but guilty of Larceny. To be punished with 39 lashes against his naked body. Sept. 29, 1863, p.279-- ALEX--slave of Wm. OGG GLOUCESTER--slave of Mrs. SIMMONS FRANK--slave of Wm. HARRIS Charged with burning P.T. OWENS' BARN. 1864 Mar. 24, 1864, p. 427-- Cmlth v. Jno. P. POOL indictment for trading with a slave. Found guilty and fined $150.00. 1865 Monday, March 20, 1865, p. 85-- The Com. of Ky Christian Circuit Court Sct. The Court House at Hopkinsville Ky having been burned by the Rebel soldiers and the County Court having designated the third Story of Brown's building Known as the "Odd Fellows Hall" as the place for holding the Present term of this Court ..."
