Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 5th ed., 1887, Woodford Co. SAMUEL B. WALLACE was born in Beaufort District, S. C., March 9, 1811, and is the second son of Samuel McDowell Wallace, a native of Kentucky, and Miss Annie Mauer, of Beaufort, S. C. His paternal grandfather, Judge Caleb Wallace, was born in Virginia in 1742, and educated at Princeton College, in New Jersey. He immigrated to Kentucky in 1785, and was appointed judge of the appellate court in 1785, which office he filled until about 1805. He owned a very large track of land in Woodford County, near where Midway now stands, and died in 1814. Samuel McD. Wallace was the eldest son, and was his father's executor. About the year 1804, his health failing, he went to Beaufort, S. C., and there married his first wife, Miss Mauer, in that year. There he engaged in planting, and whilst living in that district, two sons were born, viz.: Caleb, February 22, 1806, and Samuel Baker, March 9, 1811. In 1814 Mrs. Wallace died and he returned to Kentucky. Shortly afterward he was married to Mrs. Payne, a widow of Kentucky, who died in 1816. He was next married (in 1817) to Miss Matilda Lee, of Woodford County, who was a sister of the first wife of Hon. John J. Crittenden. Samuel B. Wallace, when three years of age, was brought from South Carolina to Kentucky by his father, his mother having died. He entered Transylvania University at the age of eighteen and remained a year, when he returned to South Carolina. There he was married November 23, 1831, to Miss Anna M. Taylor, of Beaufort District. In 1847 he returned to Kentucky and engaged in farming, which he has pursued all his life. Mrs. Wallace died March 15, 1874, the mother of six children still living: Florence, Eugene, Edward, Edward M., Robert, Andrew and Annie M. Besides these, they lost three, viz.: William, who was born September 11, 1832, and died in South Carolina, September 11, 1840; Morgan, born January 1, 1841, died in 1842; and Emma, born January 7, 1856, died October 31, 1876. The eldest daughter, Florence, is married to Rev. William H. Whitsett, of Tennessee, now professor in the Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville. Edward M. married Miss Lucy Graddy, daughter of William H. Graddy, Esq., of Woodford County; Robert married Miss Maggie Alford of the same county. Mr. Wallace has now been president of the board of directors of the Midway and Versailles Turnpike Road Company for thirty years. His farm is beautifully situated on this road, and contains 300 acres. ------------------------------ From: WRFC71A@prodigy.com (MRS BEULAH A FRANKS) Date: Mon, 7 Jul 1997 08:29:38, -0500 Subject: KY-F: Bio: Lee.Crawford-Franklin Co. HISTORY OF KENTUCKY AND KENTUCKIANS, E. Polk Johnson, three volumes, Lewis Publishing Co., New York & Chicago, 1912. Common version, Vol. II, p. 1123. CRAWFORD LEE. One of those native sons of whom Franklin has reason to be proud is Crawford Lee, county clerk and a very efficient and popular public official. The date of his birth is recorded as March 20, 1869, and he is the son of John H. and Mary Elizabeth (Walker) Lee, both of whom were born in Owen County and came of old and highly respected Kentucky families. The grandfather, Dr. Joseph Lee of Owen county, was a native of Virginia and a relative of General Robert E. Lee. This mother is a daughter of William Walker and is of English extraction, her grandfather, Bellfield Walker, having been born in England. Mr. Lee's father was a school teacher in early life, who afterward took up the agricultural vocation and followed it until the end of his life, which occurred at the age of sixty-nine years. His widow is still living. Crawford Lee had the good fortune, as it would seem by a study of the lives of most prominent men, to have been born and reared upon the farm. He worked on the farm in the summer and went to school in the winter and supplemented his common school education by a three years' course at Georgetown College. After leaving school Mr. Lee took up farming and engaged in it successfully until he entered upon the duties of county clerk, to which office he had been elected in November, 1908. He has always been a stanch Democrat in politics and is one of his party's most active workers. He has several fraternal relations, in which he takes great pleasure, these extending to the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and the Eagles. He is also a member of the Baptist church. Mr. Lee was married in 1896 to Miss Anna B. Duvall and five children are growing up beneath their roof, namely, Arthur M., Estell H., Cleora Grace, Nevill Garrett and Kelly C. KY From an unidentified newspaper 1891 Sophie Emily SIVLEY was the daughter of Absalom and Dolly BOSTICK and was born in Stokes Co., N.C., Aug. 1, 1827. She was one of a family of eight children, four boys and four girls. The entire family moved to Christian Co, Ky., May 1846. The father died in 1855, the mother in 1865. She was married to Eli H. Sivley July 11 1850. There were born unto them four daughters and one son, all of whom are living. Sister Sivley was converted at Hebron in Aug., 1874, being led to the altar of prayer by her only son. He repentance was deep and conversion very clear and satisfactory. She immediately joined the Methodist church at Hebron and made a faithful member the rest of her life. Raised by a pious mother she was a firm believer in the christian religion, and taught her children to read the Bible, attend church and Sunday school, although not a christian herself until she was 47 years of age. Being timid and reticent, she was not demonstrative in the religious worship but was devotional and always attended worship when she could. Her sickness which resulted in death was of four months' duration, being that of heart trouble. She suffered intensely at times, but bore it with patience and without a murmur. She continued to read the New Testament and Christian Advocate, which had been her companion for years, as long as she had rest from pain. All had been done for her that tender hands and medical skill could do. Her days were numbered and her work was done, she quietly fell to sleep about midnight July 25, 1891, and her spirit went to God who gave it. She was a true wife, an affectionate mother, a friend to humanity and a devout Christian. She sleeps well.
