R. Victor, and is the beloved one of the household. Much indulgence has not spoiled a sweet and generous disposition, nor has much flattery disturbed her meekness and modesty. Miss Anna is regarded as one of our beauties. She is slightly above medium height, beautifully formed and graceful; lovely hazel eyes and chestnut hair, combine with a soft, fair complexion and features purely classical. Miss Victor possesses along with her other charms rare historic talent, and has the same beautiful voice that was so remarked upon in her relative, Marie Prescott. She is one of society's favorites, and her friends feel that no company is quite complete without her presence. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cynthiana Democrat, June 1896, Page 16 ------------------------------ From: Diana Flynn Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 14:50:33 -0400 Subject: KY-F: BIO: Hodge, Fidelio T. - Livingston Co > >"HISTORY OF VANDERBURGH CO., INDIANA FROM THE EARLIEST TIMES TO THE PRESENT, >WITH BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCHES, REMINISCENCES, ETC." BRANT AND FULLER 1889 > >PAGE 451 >CITIZENS OF EVANSVILLE > >FIDELIO T. HODGE, born January 30, 1817, is a native of Livingstone county, Ky. His parents, Thomas and Harriet (Barnes) Hodge, were natives of North Carolina, and with the pioneers who drifted from that section over into western Kentucky in the early part of the nineteenth century, migrated from their native home. It was in 1805 that they settled in the then wild west. There they lived and died, the father in 1837, the mother in 1850, each at the age of sixty years. The family consisted of nine children. Their lives were simple and their manners plain. All labored together for the common support. The subject of this sketch made his home at his father's cabin until he was twenty-five years of age. At that age he went to Golconda, Ill., and for some time was engaged there as a clerk. From 1840 to 1846 he added materially to his fortune by trading along the coasts of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, with the flat-boats and store boats that were so common at that period. Returning to Golconda, he began the business of a dry goods merchant, and continued so occupied until 1863, when he removed to Evansville. In the following year his business house at No. 200 Water street was erected at a cost of $27,000, where, ever since, he has been engaged in the wholesale liquor trade. During the twenty-four years of his residence here, he has been signally successful in business. Mr. Hodge has been twice married. In 1847 he was united in marriage with Julia A. Giffith, whose death occurred in 1861. Two years later, Miss Rose White, a native of New Orleans, La., born in 1838, became his wife. Of the first union seven children were born, Henry, Richard, Sally, Edwin, Clinton, all now deceased, and Indiana and Mary Agnes, now living; of the second marriage there are three children: Rose, Flora and Maydell. BAKER, leading stock-breeder, was born September 28, 1843, in Washington Township, Ind., and is the third of the four children of William and Delia (Manley) Baker, natives of Kentucky, and of Irish descent, who removed to this State about 1822. Our subject, when a boy, was inured to farm work, but attended select school for some time. August 26, 1861, he enlisted in Company H, Eighty-third Indiana Volunteer Infantry, the regiment being assigned to the Army of the Cumberland, and taking active part in the battles of Thompson's Station (where the regiment was taken prisoners, and exchanged after thirty days), Resaca, Dalton, Kenesaw Mountain, Peach Tree Creek and Atlanta, and was discharged September 28, 1864, the day he attained his majority. After returning, he served three years as Deputy Sheriff. February 15, 1871, he married Sarah J., daughter of Jefferson and Sarah Farr, by which union were born four children--Zulie A., Emma, Sarah D. and Charlie J. In 1871, he moved to his present abode--a farm of 240 acres, well improved, cultivated and stocked. Mr. Baker has made a specialty of stock-breeding with Duke thoroughbred cattle, and by industry and ability has established himself in life. He has served two terms as Township Trustee, is an active Republican and an honored citizen. From its side rises abruptly a hill of some pretension, covered with an undisturbed growth of oak, maple and underbrush and made brilliant by myriads of scarlet creepers, beds of iris, mountain pink and lady's slippers. >From the river bank the tall pale sycamore and the broad spreadingelm interlace their branches with those on the other sides forming a perfect arch over head, while drooping willows sway and swash in the slumbrous, silent water below. Here the turtle-dove coos to her mate and the red-bird skips from bough to bough, the sun perch joyusly leaps in the air and the ground squirrel cunningly peeps from his cosy nest. Without thought we leave the dust of life behind us and bring only rest and love into this nook where nature smiles. Many are the traces of lovers' names upon the trunks of trees and various the device of garland and viguette. So close to nature are we here that love comes to us as the bee to the flowers and lips murmur words of tenderness and "soft eyes look love to eyes that speak again" in the hush and stillness of this all pervading scene. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cynthiana Democrat, June 1896, Page 16 ------------------------------ From: Diana Flynn Date: Sat, 30 Aug 1997 23:18:34 -0400 Subject: KY-F: BIO: Brown, Thomas J. - Unknown Co "COUNTIES OF MORGAN, MONROE & BROWN, INDIANA. BROWN is the eldest child of George W. and Susanna (Wright) Brown, a native of Kentucky, and was born November 18, 1837. Mr. and Mrs. Brown were respectively of Irish and German extraction, and both natives of Kentucky. After living on a farm until 1842, they moved from the State of their nativity to this State, and township, and here entered land for a home. In 1865, they removed to where the former yet lives, his wife having died some years before. Thomas J. Brown attended the township schools and remained at home, having almost the entire support of the family, until his twenty-third year, his father having long been unable to labor. In 1859, he married Mrs.Cynthia A. McNeely, a native of Kentucky, after which events he moved to the farm owned by his wife, where they still reside, and to which he has added 200 acres, making an aggregate of 440 acres, one of the best farms in the township. In connection with agriculture, Mr. Brown has had a country store for about two years. Mr. Brown is a life-long Democrat, a worthy citizen, and, with his wife, a member of the Christian Church.
