July 29. Custer Gardner was hanged in the county jail yard here Thursday morning for the murder of Esquire Osborne and son Dave Osborne. Hindman, Ky. July 29. The body of Taylor Hayne, 71 years old, a civil war veteran, was found 20 steps from Collin's distillery. He had been terribly beaten. Silas, Jasper and McClellan Collins, sons of Robert Collins, the distiller, have been arrested for the murder. Sturgis, Ky. July 29. While the 10 and 12 year old sons of Joseph Lilly were out hunting the younger was accidentally killed by the elder, since which time the latter's mind has been unbalanced from grief over the tragedy. Central City, Ky. July 29. John D. Edwards, a blacksmith at the Gish mines, three miles west of here, was killed by an engine on the Illinois Central Railroad. Frankfort, Ky. July 29. Joseph R. Robinson, aged 81, former sheriff and prominent in banking and religious circles, died here Thursday afternoon. One of his daughters, Mrs Ben Farmer lives in Chicago. Miss Bettie Ellis returned to her home at Masonville, after a month's visit to her father, J. W. Whipp, at this place. Ray Toms has been keeping batch [cooking?] the last two weeks, while Miss Ettar, his sister, is visiting at Indianapolis. Mrs. N. E. Dillingham, of Chapman, Kan., was visiting her nephew, Henry Thomas, this week. George Ellis, of Ellisburg, was visiting his daughter, Mrs. W. H. Gadberry. George A. Hendrickson, aged 65, who lived near Atterson, died last Saturday, of Kidney disease, was buried Sunday at Casey Creek. Levi Shepard, and Miss Mandy Mills, of near Rheber died last week and were buried at Salem Cemetery. William Sharp, of near Yosemite, aged 66, died last Thursday and was buried at Green River Cemetery, Friday. REv. W. G. Montgomery preached the funeral. Ruby and Bess little daughters of J. Q. Montgomery accompanied their father to South Fork, where he is holding a protracted meeting this week. Orbry, little son of Mr. and Mrs. L. M. Combest, is sick of fever. Born to the wife of Basil Fleming Goode, a girl. The infant child of Madison Wethington, was laid to rest, last week, in St. Bernard's cemetery. Born to the wife of A. C. Wethington, a boy. Mrs. W. He says I am now located in Grayson County, Texas, a border county and very fine. Irvin Ewing and his sister, Anabel were over in Marion county with their grandmother for Xmas. James B. Wethington and his son, Raphael, were in Louisville sightseeing and shopping, last week. This is a long letter from J. H. Browning of Orrick, Mo., dated Dec. 14, 1905. If interested in the entire letter let me know and I will copy it for you. J. K. Winfrey, of Runnellstown, Io., a cousin of your scribe, and A. L. Browning, who have been on an extended visit to relatives in Texas spent several days last week visiting relatives in and around Orrick. Cousin J. K. was born and raised in Russell county, Ky., but he has been living in Polk county, Iowa for a number of years... J. W. Brown and wife are moving their household goods to their daughter's, Enna Allen, about seven miles in the country. They will remain there until next summer and then Josh says he is going back to Old Kentucky for a long visit... I have just had a chat with Mr. Alexander Duggins, who was born and raised on a farm near Lancaster, Ky., but has lived in Missouri continuously since 1868, with the exception of a short time he spent a few years ago in Oklahoma. Mr. Duggins is a brother of "Uncle" Mack Rubarts' wife, and is one of our substantial farmers. Everett Wesley is paying us a visit after having been absent almost a year. TEPPLE BLOOMINGTON TOWNSHIP AND CITY, MONROE COUNTY, INDIANA PAGE 555 JOHN B. BUSKIRK, a native of Kentucky, was born September 5, 1815, in Shelby County. He is eldest son of Abram and Mary A. (Boswell) Buskirk, natives of Pennsylvania and Virginia respectively. They came to Indiana in 1817, and lived in New Albany until 1820, when they came to Monroe County and settled on a farm near Bloomington. The father was a stone-mason, and removing to Bloomington in 1831, followed his trade for a number of years. He was Associate Judge of the Bloomington courts for some time. He served as Postmaster for four years,a nd was Justice of the Peace for several years. He died in October, 1853. The mother died in 1850. The subject was reared at home until seventeen years of age, when he began learning the cabinet-maker's trade with William McCollough. In 1833, he went to New Albany, and worked at his trade for two years, when he returned to Bloomington for some time. Removing thence to Bedford, he remained for nearly twenty years; he then went to Orange County, where he engaged in the general merchandise business for eighteen years, the greater part of which he acted as Postmaster. Removing thence of Paola, Ind., he edited the Paola "News". In 1878, he returned to Bloomington, where he at present resides, sixty-nine years of age. On January 2, 1840, he was married to Maria H. Ritter, daughter of John Ritter, a citizen of Kentucky. They have had six children, five of whom are living--Thomas B., John W., Caroline L., Margaret B. and George A. Mr. Buskirk is a member of the A. F. & A. M. and of the I. O. O. F. He is a Democrat and a member of the Methodist Church. (Ritter) Buskirk, natives of Kentucky, was born on November 20, 1845, in Bedford, Lawrence Co., Ind. His parents at present reside in Bloomington, and are spoken of elsewhere in this work. The subject of this sketch was reared in his native county until eight years of age, when he went with his parents to Orange County, and lived until 1859. He then entered the State University at Bloomington, remaining for two years. He enlisted in Company G, Forty-ninth Indiana Volunteers, under Col. John W. Ray. He served until June, 1863, and took part in the engagements at Chickasaw Bluffs and Arkansas Post. He then received an honorable discharge on account of disability, and in the fall of that year he again entered college, remaining for two years, and then went to North America, where he began the study of law with the Hon. James L. Collins. He continued for two years, then formed a partnership and practiced for one year. He then removed to Paola, and became partner with his brother, continuing until the spring of 1869, when he moved to Bloomington, remaining there for two years with his uncle. He then went into partnership with Lester L. Norton, and two years later became the partner of H. C. Duncan, which firm is at present doing a good, lucrative practice, and it is considered one of Monroe County's best law firms. He was elected Prosecuting Attorney for District 8 (Orange, Du Bois, Crawford, Perry and Spencer), which position he resigned on coming to Bloomington. In 1869, he was married to Ella A. Broadwell, daughter of Jonathan P. Broadwell, a prominent citizen of Tippecanoe County, Ind. They had three children, one of whom is living--Ella A. His wife died April 30, 1878.
