HIESTAND, a prominent citizen of Jackson Township, was born in Washington County, Ind., October 18, 1837, being the fifth of a family of nine children born to Isaac and Jemima (Richards) Hiestand. His father was a native of Virginia, from which State he removed to Indiana in 1818. The mother was a native of Kentucky, and came to this State at a very early date. Isaac H. had limited advantages of schools, but by his energy he succeeded in securing a practical education. He has lived with his parents until the present time, except the period of his service in the late war. In July of 1861 he entered the service of the United States as a private in Company C, Twenty-third Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He served bravely and with high credit for nearly two and a half years. He was wounded, and in consequence was discharged after having been promoted to the rank of Sergeant. On December 24, 1865, his marriage with Dorothy A. Martin was solemnized, and to this union have been born eight children, six of whom are now living: Fannie, Oliver M. (dead), Hite H., Lydia E., Benjamin H., Isaac H. (dead), Letha M. and Raymond G. He is a member of the United Brethren Church, and contributes liberally to its support. In politics he is a stanch Republican. FRANKLIN WRIGHT Franklin Wright, 82, Sturgis, died Sunday at 6:20pm at the Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. Mr. Wright was a member of the First Baptist Church in Sturgis for 54 years. He is preceded in death by his wife, Justine, May 24, 1985. Survivors include one daughter, Linda Hedgepath of Sturgis; two sons, Larry and Tom, both of Madisonville; two sisters, Elizabeth Butts of Sturgis, and Mary Holms of San Bernardino, CA; two brothes, Dock E. "Buster" Wright of Sturgis and Eugene Wright of Whitney, IN; 14 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Services are today at 1pm at Whistell Funeral Home in Sturgis with Rev. Brodie Ambrose and Reb. Bob White officiating. Burial with be in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. DENISE ELDER HANCOCK Denise Elder Hancock, 36, Morganfield, died Tuesday, August 26, at 9:15 am at Welborn Baptist Hospital in Evansville after a long illness. Mrs. Hancock was a member of St. Agnes Church in Uniontown. Survivors include her husband, Henry, her parents, Damien and Mary Catherine Elder of Morganfield; two daughters, Allyson and Jessica, both at home; six sisters, Carolyn Brown of Madisonville, Pat Clark and Nancy French, both of Uniontown, Ann Meacham of Sturgis, Jeranne Henshaw of Tazwell, VA, and Sandra Elder of Bardstown; six brothes, Jerry Elder of Uniontown, Tommy Elder , Scott Elder, Bobby Elder, Richard Elder, and Keith Elder of Morganfield, and nieces and nephews. Services were at 10am Thursday at St. Agnes Church in Uniontown with Father Henry Wieder officiating. Burial was in St. Agnes Cemetery in Uniontown. AGNES PEARL DRURY Agnes Pearl Drury, 93, Morganfield, died Friday at 5:55am at Union County Methodist Hospital. Mrs. Drury was a former member of St. Agnes Church Alter Society. She is preceded in death by her husband, Orville Drury in 1984. Survivors include two daugthers, Angela Drury of Morganfield and Judy Ryan of Louisville; two sisters, Margaruite Alvey and Regina Wedding, both of Morganfield; one granddaughter, Kelly Hardesty of Louisville, four step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Sunday at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Uniontown with Fr. Malachy Fulton officiating. Burial was in St. Agnes Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Agnes Church Building Fund. ROBERT BEAL Robert Beal, 77, died Sunday afternoon at Senior Citizens Nursing Home. He retired from the Army Air Corps as a technical Sergeant. A 32nd degree Mason, he ws a member of Madisonville Masonic Lodge 143, Scottish Rite and Rizpah Shrine. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5480 and American Legion Post 6. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy Hatler; three daughters, Roberta V. "Bobbi" Ivy and Susan Knapp, both of Madisonville, and Lee Anna Strienbrecher of Tulsa, OK; two sons, Donald V. of Sturgis and Eric Hatler of Princeton; a brother, Charles E. of Madisonville and six grandchildren. His son, Greg Hatler, died in 1983. Services are today at 2pm at Barnett-Strother Funeral HOme with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery, where a Fort Campbell detachmetn will conduct military rites. BETTIE DIXON Bettie Lou Dixon, 94, died Friday at Crittenden County Convalescent Center in Marion. She worked as a cook for local familiies and retired from Camp Breckinridge. She was a life member of Phillips Chapel CME Church, where she had been president of the Missionary Society and treasurer of the Benevolent Fund. She was also a member of Eastern Star Zella Chapter 43. Surviving are five daughters, Ariana E. Johnson and Carrie Hubert, both of Sturgis, Elsie J. Elie and Gertie Wallace, both of Cleveland, and Beulah Collier of Decatur, IL; five sons, John H. and Charles R., both of Sturgis, James L. of Cleveland, and Nathaniel L. and Clarence T., both of Champaing, IL; 47 grandchildren, 88 great grandchildren, and 42 great great grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Her husband, Rev. John W. Dixon died in 1983. Services will be at 1pm today at Phillips Chapel Church in Sturgis, with burial in Cumberland Presbyterian Cemetery. LOUISE HICKS BRYANT Louise Hicks Bryant, 90, Henderson, died at 4:50am Sunday at Community Methodist Hospital. A member of Lawndale Baptist Church, she was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond, who died in 1911. Survivors include three granddaughters, Sherri Leadbetter of Henderson, Lisa Pruiett of Morganfield, and Nancy Puckett of Evansville; four grandsons, MIchael Laz Puckett, John Steven Puckett, and Allen Puckett all of Henderson, and David Claycomb of PA; 16 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Graveside services were Tuesday at Fernwood Cemetery. SAMUEL FULTON WOODRING Samuel Fulton Woodring, 66, Morganfield, died Wednesday September 3, at 6:45 pm at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville. Survivors include his wife, Roxie Jean; three daughters, Patsy Buckman and Wanda Winders, both of Morganfiled, and Lisa Goudy of Vincent, OH; one sister, Mae Atkins of Cedro, WVA; one brother, Paul Woodring of Wheeling, IL; nieces and nephews, and one sister in law, Law Marie Woodring; seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services were at 2pm Saturday at Grace Fellowship Church in Morganfield. Burial was in Odd Fellows Cemetery. BETTY L. ROSE Betty L. Rose, 86, Sturgis, died Sunday at 1:30am at Loretta Nursing Home in Shawneetown, IL. Survivors include one daughter, Naomi Benson of Sturgis; one son, Eddie Jones of Sturgis, and one sister, Jean McBride of Sturgis; 15 grandchildren, 28 great grandchildren, and six great great grandchildren. There will be visitation. Burial will be a later date. GEORGE BEAVEN George Beaven, 88, Morganfield, died Monday at Union County Methodist Hospital. A member of St. Ann Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus, he was a farmer. Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Teresa; seven children, Donald Beaven of Sturgis, W. R. "Bill" Beaven, Bob Beaven, and Teresa Lee Thomas, all of Morganfield, Nancy Mayes and Gladys Drury, both of Waverly, and Judy McMain of Marion; one sister, Bertha Edmondson; 26 grandchildren; 44 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Services will be at 10 am at St. Ann Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Agnes Cemetery in Uniontown. JAMES N. "BIRDSEYE" BYRNE James N. "Birdseye" Byrne, 71, Morganfiedl, died Monday at 7:46pm at Harrisburg Medical Center in Harrisburg, IL. He was a member of the Shrine Lodge. He retired from the US Army after 28 years of service. Survivors include three sons, James David Byrne of Sturgis, John Robert Byrne of Owensboro, and Mark Lewis Byrne of Morganfield; one sister, Mary Katherine Clements of Waverly; and eight grandchildren. Services will be at 11am Thursday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield.
