ky-footsteps Tuesday, 25 November 1997 Volume 01 : Number 277 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Chas Date: Tue, 25 Nov 1997 02:33:18 -0600 Subject: KY-F: BIBLE: Shackelford; Union, Henderson, Caldwell Co's This bible is not all that old. It is "The Self-Pronouncing S. S. Teacher's Combination Bible," printed by the National Bible Press in Philadelphia. There is no date, but the two copyrights are in 1895 and 1902. However, it is a replacement bible. My grandmother told me that her mother was very upset over the original being lost before the 1st World War during a move to St. Louis, along with all the family pictures. (Ouch!) The owner was my great grandfather, George Gipson Shackelford. A native of Morganfield, Union Co., KY, he was a son of Luther Prentis Shackelford (b. 1836) and Mary Jane (Carr) Bishop Shackelford (b. 1839). Mary Jane Shackelford was the widow of Fielding Bishop when she married L. P. Shackelford about 1862. George G. Shackelford loved being a policeman. He was working in Henderson, KY in the early 1890s when he heard there was an opening in Princeton. He promptly moved there, becoming a member of the city's three-man police force. Unfortunately, this was before civil service type job security, and whenever a Republican mayor got elected all the Democrats were fired. George Shackelford would then go work for the IC railway until the next election, when the Democrats would come back in. I believe he was police chief at one time. About the third time he got booted out of work by political changes, he got disgusted and moved to St. Louis. He began as foreman on the Terminal RR -- and ended up as superintendent. George G. Shackelford and his wife were both natives of Union County. Their first two children were born in Sturgis, KY. The next two were born in Henderson, while the last was born in Princeton. Here are the entries as written: Parents' Names. Husband, George G. Shackelford. Born, July 15, 1866. Wife, Mary A[lice]. Hollowell. Born, May 20, 1867. Married, March 21, 1888. Childrens' Names.
