April 5th ‘75 Mr. G.R. Smith, Dear Brother, Why don’t you write? we have not heard from you since we received your picture nearly a month ago, we have been looking for a letter for two or three weeks, thinking every day "that surely the next mail will bring us a letter from Cloverport,(2) " but we have looked in vain, you must write immediately, Ma is uneasy about you fearing that you are sick. Bro. Kelly preached at Caverna yesterday (the 1st). I expect the church there will engage him to preach for them this year, there was a good crowd there yesterday, we had singing in the evening by Mr. Craig and his class, he has been teaching out at "Amity",(3) they sing in a small book called "Songs of Glory." Mr. Higbee is going to move out to Texas right soon, he went out there some time ago and bought a great deal of land. Mr. Ransom Harper died recently with cancer of the face, he was buried yesterday. Pa shipped sister’s piano about a week ago, she has been writing for it almost every time she has written home since she has been out there, but it was difficult for Pa to a box for it. Ma says do you need any clothing this spring? any that you can’t get there? if you do let us know. Brother who are you boarding with? Tell me something about your room-mate, what kind of gentlemen is he? is he moral? Did you get the "harp" we sent you? I have learned two new songs recently viz.: "Mabel Clare" and "Neath the waves her Spirit wanders", both of them are right pretty, we will sing them together when you come home. Bro. Willie will not lend one his voice only in "Molly Darling." Brother write soon, immediately and write often, you don’t know how much rejoiced we are whenever we get a letter from you. My March - lillies {sic} are in full bloom. I will send you one in this letter. I am going to send Sister one too. Brother excuse this red ink. I have no other at present , or I should not have written with it. Cornelia says tell you she wants to see you so bad, she says she is going to bake a cake for you when you come home. All send much love to you. be sure to write immediately Your devoted sister, Jennie Smith P.S. I forgot to tell you that the "Good-Templars" have re-organized at Caverna, Janie (4) 1 According to the Kentucky Atlas & Gazetteer, (http://www.uky.edu/Kentucky Atlas/) Caverna is a variant name for present day Horse Cave, Hart County, KY. 2 The New and Complete Gazetteer of the U.S. (1854) (http://www.ancestry.com/search.htm) reveals that both Kentucky and Tennessee boast a town named Cloverport. Cloverport, Tennessee can be found in Hardeman County while Cloverport, Kentucky is located in Breckenridge County on the Ohio River, 110 miles below Louisville. 3 The Electronic Guide to KY Places Names (http://www.uky.edu/KentuckyPlaceNames/) reveals that Amity was a school located in northern Barren County, KY which is situated just to the south of Horse Cave. 4 The two signatures on this letter definitely appear to be written by the same person. However, Jennie appears to be on the first and Janie on the second. I have been unable to determine if Janie could be a nickname for Jennie or vice versa. It is also possible that the second signature was written in haste and just appears to be Janie. A researcher familiar with this family or a search of records for the family might make this clear. We do not believe that we are related to the letter writer or receiver, but that Grandad kept the letter because it was old. If you feel it would make a nice addition to the KY archives as a "slice of life" or even as a very narrowly focused research document, I would be happy for you to post it. We would be happy for a descendant to have the original. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for you help, Carol D.
