War Pension - Letcher Co Edward & Mary Polly W-9236 Virginia In Perry County, Kentucky, on November 17, 1825, Edward Polly, resident of said county, aged 67, on the 21st of December next, made oath in court that he enlisted as private for 18 months about 6 weeks after the Defeat of General Horatio Gates, near Camden, South Carolina, in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in the company commanded by Captain Burton, and in about 2 weeks his Captain marched him to his company; and joined the regiment which he understood his company belonged to when he enlisted; commanded by Colonel Gibson in the Virginia Line of the Continental establishment. That he continued to serve when he was discharged from the service in Halifax or Brunswick County, Virginia. He received a discharge. That his occupation is that of a farmer, but because of old age and loss of part of his strength in his thigh, he is unable to work. His wife, Polly (Mary), about 49 years of age, is of weakly constitution. His son, David, about 13 years of age, is able to support himself; his daughter, Susanna, about 11 years of age is of good health. He lived forty some odd miles from the Courthouse. B. Anthony Hall states that he knows of Edward Polly performing a tour of 18 months in the regular army. That he, Hall, was a regular in the army and knew said Polly previous to his enlistment and during his own term of service. Josua Mullins, aged 70 years on 10th of May, 1826, made oath that: He enlised in Captain Burton's Company at the same time with Edward Polly for the same term of service and served together in the army as described by said Polly. They both were discharged by Captain Webb on the same day. On May 26, 1829, before Wm. Jacket (?), Justice of the Peace in Pike County, Anthony Hall, Henry Polly, Elijah Baker and James Honocker made affidavits of their acquaintance with Edward Polly and to their belief in his statements. Edward Polly of Perry County was inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky to commence on 10th of February, 1828. The certificate of the pension was issued on 15th of February 1828. In Whitesburgh, Letcher County, Kentucky, on 7th of June, 1847, Mary Polly, resident of Letcher County, aged about 70 years, appeared and made oath that she was married to Edward Polly before his services expired in the army, that they were married in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. That her husband, the above Edward Polly, died 2 years ago on 19th of May last. On the 4th of May 1850, before Justice of the Peace, James Collins, in Letcher County, Kentucky, Mary Polly appeared and made oath on further declaration that her maiden name was Mary Mullen, that she was married to said Edward Polly in Pittsylvania County, Virginia in 1784. That the ceremony was performed by a Baptist preacher named Bailey. That her said husband owned land in Pittsylvania, which he deeded to Daniel Witcher (?) in 1787. That she and her said husband lived in Pittsylvania County about eight years after their marriage. That about 1792, she with her said husband, came to reside in Tennessee, where they continued to live for 30 years. At the end of that time, they came to reside in Letcher County where she now resides. Moses Adams made oath in Letcher County, on June 8, 1847, stating that he has been acquainted with Edward Polly and mary Polly, his wife, upwards of 40 years and to his belief in their statements. David Polly, aged forty-two, made oath in Letcher County, that he is the son of Edward Polly and Mary or Agnes Polly, his wife. That his parents, Edward Polly and his wife Mary Polly, had 12 children whose names are Sally, Andrew, Polly, Agnes, Henry, Raney Joseph, Edward, Vina, Nancy, Susannah and David. Thomas Cassaday made affidavit to the identification of David Polly. Mary Polly was inscribed on the Roll of Kentucky to commence on the 4th March 1844. After the payment of all my just debts and funeral expenses, I give Devis and bequest to my wife Maria Scott FERGUSON, to be owned by her absolutely, all and every species of my property that I may own at my death, to be disposed of by will, deed or in any other manner that she may desire. I direct that no inventory, appraisment, or surety upon the official bond of my executor shall be required and no settlement of fiducial accounts. I appoint my wife as executor of this will. I paid the most of the money for the cattle when the pasturage is paid and the interest on the moneys the profit on the balance is to be divided between me and my brother. William PAYNE to deed me or has deeded me the house and lot and __________ of ground L 16 poles I live in, and if there is enough money to pay my debts the house and ground is to go to Eliza and the children. The money in Jonas HEDGES (?) hands from R. APPINON (?) is to go to Eliza and the Children whatever he may see cause to give them out of it. A. R. FISHER owes me $15.00. $10.00 loaned money, $2.50 for corn and $2.50 out of the grocery. Squire William ROGERS owes me for 2 cribs of corn. Sell the groceries and let them pay the debts. I want William MASON to attend to my business as executor, I owe my sister $28.00 and my Father for corn and borrowed money. Obits on page 3 this week. MARY TABOR QUINN Mary Tabor Quinn, 69, Sullivan, died Thursday at 2:46pm at her residence. Mrs. Quinn was a member of Grangertown Baptist Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mary Ann Brown of Uniontown, Jane Rich of Marion, Janet Newcom of Clay, and Margie Lou Powell of Henderson; five sisters, Lahoma Alford of Morganfield, Ruby Tewell and Frances Gonzales, both of Sturgis, Anita Hair of Chuluota, FL, and Blondell Tucker of Evansville; two brothers, Bill Tabor of North Highland, CA and Euguene Tabor of Evansville; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren and three step granchildren. Services were at 1:30pm Sunday at Whitsell Funeral HOme with Bro. Don Collins and Bro. Jerry Pierson officiating. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Anthony's Hospice of Union County. JOHN RICKETTS John Ricketts, 48, Morganfield, died Thursday at 8:am. Survivors include his wife; Becky; one daughter,Christy Willett of Morganfield; two sons, Brian of Morganfield and Danny of Smith Mills; one sister, Mary Kay Higham of Las Vegas, NV; one brother, Jerry Ricketts of Morganfield; two grandchildren, Dara Ricketts and Dylan Willett. Services were at 3pm Sunday at St. Ann Catholic Church with Fr. Patrick M. Bittel officiating. Burial was in St. Louis Cemetery in Henderson. (In an article about his death that appears on page 1 and is continued on page 5, it states that he died on he and his wife's 27th wedding anniversary. He had retired last month after 30 years as a construction worker. He was a union construction worker out of Evansville and worked on several major projects, including the Aztar Casino complex. He was shot by his brother. ) ABRAHAM BRADFORD Abraham Bradford, 84, Evansville, formerly of Uniontown, died Saturday at Columbia Health Care Center in Evansville. Mr. Bradford was a 54 year member of Union Masonic Lodge #219 in Uniontown, member of Scottish Rite Haddi Shrine, member of No Ruz Grotto, and the Swords of Bunker Hill. Survivors include his wife, Irene Hart Bradford of Union County; and a host of nieces and nephews. Masonic services were held Tuesday at 7pm at Boone Funeral Home in Evansville. Burial will be today at 10:00 at Alexander Mermorial Park in Evansville. RUBY ROBERSON Ruby Roberson, 88, Pride, died Monday at 11:45 am at Union County Methodist Hospital. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie J. Roberson in 1994. Survivors include two daughters, Alice Langston of Henderson and Barbara Fellows of Pride; one son, Jimmie R. Roberson of Pride; six grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Services will be today at 2:00 at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. William Graham officiating. Burial will be in Pride Bordley Cemetery. MARY KNIGHT Mary Louise Knight, 82, died Monday at Madisonville Regional Medical Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Teats, a daughter Lucy Mae and a son, Bill. Surviving are three daughters, Margaret Newton of Wingo, Ruth Elaine Poe of Cadiz, and Gloria Irene Adams of DeKoven; two sons, James of Clay and Charlie of Slaughters; two sisters, Clara Marie Woodring of Morganfield and Bessie Jennings of Little Rock, AR; 16 grandchildren and great grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Thursday at Townsend-Jones Funeral Home in Providence with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Clay. MARGARET JENKINS Margaret Jenkins, 91, Sullivan, died at 12:05 am at Union County Methodist Hospital. Survivors include nieces and nephews who care for her, Harold Vaughn of Sullivan, Louise Vaughn of Sturgis and Imogene Riggs of Evansville. Services were at 10am Monday at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. Noble Cobb officiating. Burial was in Louisville Memorial Gardens in Louisville. BERTHA EDMONDSON Bertha Drury Edmondson, 93, died Saturday night at Wellington Park in Owensboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Edmondson. Surviving are three daughters, Bette Gatten of Henderson, three step daughters, Louise and Edna Collins of Sturgis, and Glenna Reynolds of Brookport, IL; two stepsons, Raymond Edmondson of Grand Island, NE and Bob Edmondson of Denver, CO; four grandchildren, Diane Fox, Patty Shockley, Paula Morris, and Penny Oakley, and eleven great grandchildren.
