Obits on page 2. WILLIE M. BATES Willie M. Bates, 25, Morganfield, died Wednesday, Jan. 21 at 3am at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville as a result of injuries sustainted in an automobile accident. Mr. Bates was a 1990 graduate of Union County High School and an employee of Bob Brantley Painting. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack Agee in 1993. Survivors include his wife, Tracy Hite Bates; his mother, Sadie Agee of Sturgis; three sisters, Debbie Hauri of Romey, IN, Shellie Powell of Morganfield, and Marie Agee in the U.S. Navy in Italy; one brother, Gerald Bates of Morganfield; and five nieces and two nephews. Services were at 1pm Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield. Burial was in Morganfield Odd Fellow Cemetery. FRANCES GONZALES Frances Gonzales, 71, Sturgis, died Tuesday, Jan. 20 at 9pm at Jennie Stuart Medical Center in Hopkinsville. Survivors inlcude one daughter, Gayle Clifford of Clearwater, FL; four sisters, Lahoma Alford of Morganfield, Ruby Tewell of Sturgis, Anita Haire of Chuluota, FL, and Blondell Tucker of Evansville; two brothers, Bll Tabor of North Highland, CA, and Eugene Tabor of Evansville; and one grandchild. Graveside services were at 10am Friday at Pythian Ridge Cemetery. LOIS HOLDMAN Lois Holdman, 78, Stugis, died Tues, Jan. 20. at 11:20am at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Hanor of Madisonville, and Kay Russell of Sturgis; one son, Richard Holdman of Sturgis; one brother, Richard Holmes of Morganfield; and ten grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Thursday at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. Sam McMahon and Rev. Jeff Bullock officiating. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Expression of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Anthony's Hospice. ROSE HUGHLEY Rose Hughley, 71, Sturgis, died Monday at Vencor Hospital in Chicago, IL. Survivors include two sisters, Margaret Barnhill andh Ella Chipps, both of Sturgis; and nieces and nephews. Services were at 11am Saturday at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. David Pettie officiating. Burial was in Presbyterian Cemetery in Sturgis. IVA VIOLET COURTNEY Iva Violet Courtney, 53, Geneva, KY, died at 1pm Sunday at her home. She was a member of St. Anges Catholic Church in Uniontown. Survivors include her husband, Marion F. "Buddy" Courtney; three daughters, Rhonda Messamore and Martha Ann Hargrove, both of Morganfield, and Patricia Gipson of Corydon; two sons, Leslie Courtney and Charlie Courtney both of Corydon; three brothers, Douglas and John Lewis, both of Smith Mills, and Allen Pat Lewis of Uniontown; three sisters, Martha Turley of Smith Mills, Anna Parrish of Henderson, and Patsy Eblen of Dixon; six grandchildren; four step grandchildren adn two step great grandchildren. Services will be today at 1:30m at Holy Name Catholic Church in Henderson with Rev. Edward Bradley officiating. Burial will be in Fairmont Cemetery. ANNA PENNINGTON Anna Pennington, 67, Sturgis, died at 3:20pm Saturday at Union County Methodist Hospital. She was a member of The Church of God in Sturgis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Odell Pennington in 1993. Survivors include one son, Don Pennington of Sturgis; one sister, Fannie Hinton of Sturgis; and three grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Tuesday at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. Sam McMahon officiating. Burial was in Grangertown Cemetery. (my personal note- Anna was a beautician) DANNY CAMPBELL Danny Campbell, 41, Dekoven, died Sunday at 2pm at his residence. Survivors include his wife, Susan Campbell; one daughter, Charley Dawn of Evansville; his parents, John R. Campbell of Morganfield and Elsie Campbell of Morganfield; two sisters, Paula Meadows and Sandy Wilkins, both of Morganfield; one brother, Terry Campbell and 1/2 brother, Mike Campbell of Clay, cousins, nieces and nephews. Services will be today at 11am at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with Rev. Geroge Yates officiating. Burial will be in Caseyville Cemetery. (my note-apparent suicide) MARTHA J. HARMON Martha J. Harmon, 70, Henderson, died at 6am Sunday at Community Methodist Hospital. She was a homemaker. Survivors include one son, Bobby Harmon of Henderson; one sister, Louvinnie Owens of Dixon; one brother, Loyd Stone of Sturgis; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services will be today at 10:30am at Tapp Funeral Home with Rev. Donald Berry officiating. EARL MCKENDREE Earl McKendree, 78, Morganfield died Monday at 2am at Union County Methodist Hospital. Mr. McKendree was a member of Whispering Hope General Baptist Church. He was a WWII veteran adn a KY Colonel. He was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA. Mr. McKendree was also a past Commissioner of the Morganfield Little League Baseball Association. Survivors include his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Edna Ricks of Morganfield, Nany Piper of Uniontown, and Helen Wright of Sturgis; four sons, Jan Chambliss, Tim McKendree and Chris, all of Morganfield, and Billy McKendree of Marion, KY; one sister, Ethel Certain of Sturgis; one brother, W. D. McKendree of Providence; 17 grandchildren, and 11 great grandchildren. Services are today at 2pm at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with Rev. Robert Phillips and Rev. Morris Garett officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellow Cemetery in Morganfield. Memorial contributions may be made to the Morganfield Little League Association. RAY LEONARD HEAVRIN Ray Leonard Heavrin, 79, Sturgis, died Monday at 3:30pm on his farm near Sturgis. Survivors include his wife Elsie; one son, Jim Heavrin of Henshaw; two brothers, Lawrence Heavrin and Rowan Heavrin, both of Grove Center, and one grandchild. Services will be today at 3:30pm at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Lane officiating. Burial will be in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. IONA WALTERS BUCHANAN Iona Walters Buchanan, 91, Corydon, died at 1:55pm Saturday at Union County Methodist Hospital. She was a member of Corydon United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dutch Walters Sr. who died Jan 27, 1977 and by one son, James R. Walters, who died on September 11, 1978. Survivors include six daughters, Dorothy Sayer, Sue Givens, and Freida Sigler, all of Corydon, Leona Webb of Tell City, IN, Betty Wathen of Indianapolis, and Emma Louise Curtis of Boxville, KY; two sons, Otis Walters of Hendeson and Dutch Waltes of Corydon; one brother Jesse Owens of Hendeson; 17 grandchildren; 36 great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Tuesday at Tapp Funeral Home with Rev. Billy Glover officiating. Burial was in Shady Grove Cemetery in Poole. MILDRED OVERFIELD THOMAS Mildred Overfield Thomas, 76, Uniontown, died Tuesday, January 27, at 10:51pm at Community Methodist Hospital in Henderson. Mrs. Overfield was a member of Woodland Baptist Church. Survivors include one daughter, Louise Wilson of Crossville, IL; one son, LeRoy Overfield of Uniontown; two sisters, Mary Coney of Morganfield and Jean Fowler of Henderson; one brother, Casey Courtney of Morganfield; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home with Royce Pile officiating. Burial was in Odd Fellow Cemetery in Morganfield. JIM VOSS Jim Voss, 62, Sturgis, died Wednesday, January 25, at 10:08am at Regional Medical Center in Madisonville. Mr. Voss was a member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church, a local farmer, a school bus driver, and a Union County magistrate for 8 years. He was also a a Sturgis citizen of the Year in 1977 and past president of the Union County Fair Board. Survivors include his wife, Polly Lou; one daughter, Vicki Vowels of Sturgis; two sons, Chuch Voss of Sturgis and David Voss of Naples, FL; one sister, Janice Callaway of Sturgis; one brother, Jack Voss of Marion; and three grandchildren, Bradley and Ashely Vowels of Sturgis, and Rebecca Voss of Naples, FL; two step grandchildren and one step great grandchild. Services were at 10am Saturday at Whitsell Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Ellis officiating. Burial was in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. NELLIE DURALL WHITAKER Nellie Durall Whitaker, 90, died Saturday morning at Muhlenberg County Community Hospital in Greenville. She was a member of White Plains Missionary Baptist Church. Surviving are four daughters, Mary Blades of Gilbertsville, Mildred Rickard of Sturgis, Margaret Wells of Chandler, IN, and Dorothy Rose of Graham; three sons, Kenneth of Nortonville and Jaems and William, both of White Plains; 22 grandchildren; 37 great grandchildren; 20 great great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Her husband, John Ronnie, died in 1990. Services were at 11am Monday at Reid-Walters Funeral Home in Earlington, with burial in Concord Cemetery in White Plains. LOUIS NALLY Louis Nally, 77, Morganfield, died Thursday at his son's residence in Morganfield. Survivors include his wife, Ida Nally of Waverly; one daughter, Pauline Nally of Henderson; one son, Ray Nally; one brother, James Nally of Uniontown; and two grandchildren. Services were at 2pm Sunday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield. Burial was in Odd Fellow Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Anthony's Hospice. GENE MCCULLOUGH Gene McCullough, 66, Morganfield, died Thursday, at 7:10pm at his residence. Mr. McCullough was a member of the Masonic Lodge and an Air Force veteran. Survivors include his wife, Nancy McCullough; one daughter, Barbara Thomas of Marion; one step daughter, Leslye Grindle of Stockbridge, GA; two sons, Steve McCullough of Uniontown and Mark McCullough of Henderson; two step sons, Andy Shaffer of Jonesboro, GA and Alan Shaffer of Stockbridge, GA; two brothers, Dr. Charles T. McCullough of Asheville, NC, and Richard McCullough of Lexington, KY; four grandchildren and one great grandchild. Services were at 11:30am Monday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with Rev. ANNA PERKINS HARRIS Anna Perkins Harris, 90, Morganfield, died Sunday at 7:45pm at Coble Health Care Center in Durham, NC. She became involved in college administration at Vanderbilt University and later at the universities of Michigan and Pennsylvania. She was appointed Dean of Women at the University of Vermont and was honored by a residence hall named after her. Miss Harris concluded her formal career as executive director of the National Association of Women Deans and Counselors in Washington, DC, retiring in 1972. She received an Honorary Doctor of Law degree from William Woods College in Missouri. Miss Harris moved to Durham in 1988. She was born and raised in Morganfield, and was the daughter of the late Anna Mae Cannon Harris and William Truman Harris. She was also preceded in death by a brother, William Truman Harris Jr., and a sister, Sara Dorsey Harris Brown. There are no local survivors. Surviving are neices Sara H. Craven and Patricia Wolfe of Charlotte; a sister in law, Ursula R. Harris of Charlotte; and grand nephews James, Joseph and William Craven, all of Durham. Miss Harris was a resident of the Methodist Retirement Home at the time of her death. A memorial service was held January 28 at the Coble Health Care Center in Durham. Memorial gifts may be made to the Family Council of the Methodist Retirement Home, 2616 Erwin Road, Durham, North Carolina, 27705.
