He was preceded in death by his father Lionel Shreve, who died in 1981, and his mother Pernie Shreve in 1988. Birdwhistell editor of the News died suddenly of apoplexy at the residence of her son at Lawrenceburg Henry Lewis was arrested at Lexington on the charge of being implicated in teh murder of Eugene Cassell on Jan 5. Cassell was shot and killed by unknown persons who were caught in the act of leaving with a number of stolen fowls At Frankfort Thomas Kand a private in the State Gurards was shot and illed by James Robertson a fellow soldier. The killing was accidental but Robertson is in jail. Both men resided at Lexington The wife and two children of Ed Epperson of Warren county were poisoned by eating a plant which they had mistaken for ginseng. She had been in ill health for some time and recently suffered a cerebral hemorrhage. Deceased was before marriage Miss Maggie Gifford and was 71 years of age. She was married five times, four of her husbands preceded to the grave. Her first husband was Thomas Whaley, to which two sons and a daughter were born, namely, Ben Whaley, of Richmond Ind., James Whaley of Nicholas County and Mrs. Luther Barnett, of this county. Her second marriage was to James Berry, one son, Paul Berry, of Harrison County, surviving this union. M. M. Heal was her third husband. Her fourth husband was Frank Overbey. W. H. King, her fifth and last husband, survives, together with the three sons, Ben E. Whaley, James Whaley and Paul Berry. No children were born by the last three marriages. She is also survived by several grandchildren, and two brothers, William Gifford and Erastus Gifford, of Paris. Born Feb. 22, 1915 in Providence, KY, he was the son of the late Stella Elder and O. S. Holeman. He was married Oct. 18, 1939 to Mary Jeanette Bennett who survives. A 1933 graduate of Sturgis High School, he went to law school in St. Louis, MO. A veteran of WWII, he was a 2nd Vice Commander while stationed in Japan. Mr. Holeman owned and operated a Plymouth/Chrysler dealership in Sturgis for many years. He then owned and operated a Delta Materials, a sand and gravel business until his death. In 1947 he was elected a city councilman and served for two years. In 1949 he was elected Mayor of Sturgis and served for an 8 year term. While mayor, he implemented the new dial telephone system in 1950, the natural gas system, Cypress Ditch project and Water Purification Plant were also implemented during his terms. A member of the American Legion, he was appointed by the President of the United States, and named Commander of the Riddle Post in 1959. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Farmers State Bank in 1972. He served for 20 years with the last 13 years as a chairman of the board. He was a member of the Sturgis Kiwanis for 2 years, a 32 degree Mason, and member of Rizpah Shrine Temple in Madisonville and a member of the Sturgis Cumberland Presbyterian Church. ------------------ Lilly Mae Farthing d.
