News reaches us this morning that the little city of Flemingsburg was in a state of wild excitement Tuesday night, caused by he return of the negro Chas. Gaskin, who killed James H. Rion on the streets of Flemingsburg, last May. Gaskin has been in the Covington jail for safe keeping since May, and was brought home Monday for trial, and the friends of Rion could not withstand the temptation to swing Gaskin to a limb, and at once formed a mob and proceeded to the jail for that purpose, and demanded admittance which was refused. In order to alarm the sleeping town the bells were rang and the civil authorities and the cooler headed people were aroused and came to the assistance of the Jailer, who was holding the mob at bay. Later in the night one of the guards discovered a burning fuse to a dynamite blast under one corner of the jail, and only saved the wrecking of the building by grabbing it and puling out the fuse. Several shots were exchanged between the mob and guards and one man is said to be seriously hurt. Later.----Several of the guards were shot and several of the mob. All quiet at time of going to press. The Sheriff was to Frankfort Wednesday morning and asked for the Frankfort State Militia to be sent to Flemingsburg at once and the Governor granted his request and ordered the Frankfort Company to go to Flemingsburg, and to stop by Lexington and get the Artillery. They passed here on a special train about 3:30 o'clock. - ---------------------------- [CONTINUED] The Mercury, Carlisle, Nicholas co., KY Thursday 16, Jan 1902 COWAN (to late for last week) T. Let every Democrat put his hsoulder to the wheel! The Joint debate between Hon E.T. Franks of Owensboro and Hon N.B. Hayes of Pineville here last Monday was enjoyed by a large crowd of Rockcastle citizens. The discussion was both lengthy and spicy filled with many good things. Mr Franks is rather imposing, wordy and with a very fine voice; in fact a fair stumper. The only trouble that he is devoid of reason and logic. he spoke for one hour in his opening speech and consumed most of that time in the vilification of the Democrat party. It would be well for Mr Franks and such speakers as he to study the following quotation from one of our greatest writers "Abuse is not argument; content is not criticism and a reasonable people will not consider a cuase just that defends itslef by vituperation." However, we were gald that he was too much of a man to attempt to defend the unlawful adjournment of the legislature by Mr Taylornor did he indorse the chasing of the legislators through the streets of Frankfort during the winter session by Taylor's soldiers. Hayes was not so oratorical as Franks made a sound and convencing speech and as one Republican put it afterwards the he saw many things of which the Republicans of the county ought to take warning. Campaign chairman W.C. Mullins introduced Hayes in the following apt and truthful words "Gentlemen and fellow citizens of Rockcastle county after hearing an ordinary little talk by one of our countymen, the distinguished nomine of the Republican party for congress and a little vilification and the advocacy of the gentleman who has just finished of the hanging of the election officers and commissioners no doubt you are now anxious to hear a speech therfore, I now have the pleasure of introducing to you the Hon Napolean B. Hayes of Bell county, who will make an old fashing democratic speech". FOR SALE: I have for sale fifteen molases or vinegar barrels; also three smaller barrels or kegs. W.R.
