Cantrill and R. Frank Peak at Richmond Monday Near Beattyville, Ky, Walter Evans cut his wife's throat with a razor and then committed suicide with the same weapon. Evans had only been married about a year. His wife was a beautiful young woman of nineteen years A desparate fight occurred near McWhorter ten miles from Loudon, between Frank Brown and Pleasant Vaughn on the one side and henry Wilhite on the other. Vaughn was shot through the thigh and abdomen and will die. Wilhite is missing and it is thought he was probably killed as his hat and other articles were found on the ground The case of Henry E. Youtsey, charged with complicity in the murder of Gov Goebel was called at Georgetown but continued until Wednesday on motion of the defense. It is said that Arthru Goebel will gon on the witness stand and relate to the jury a confession made to him by Youtsey. The prisoner is said to have told Mr Goebel some of the things that happened in the private office of the Secretary of State just before and at the time of shooting and to have told him who fired the fatal shot. Submitted by Rita Mackin Fox Owensboro Messenger, 14, Dec 1898, p. 6: FELIX COOMES One of the Oldest Citizens Passes Away Came to Daviess County Eighty Years Ago--An Interesting Family Record Mr. Felix Coomes, one of the oldest inhabitants of Daviess county, died December 10, at his home near Knottsville, where he has lived for the past fifty-three years. Mr. Coomes was the son of William Coomes, a pioneer of Kentucky, and was born in Nelson county in 1808. He removed to this county about eighty years ago, where Owensboro now stands, and lived there until he married Maragaret (sic) A. Head, daughter of William Head, nearly seventy years ago. His wife died ten years ago. This worthy couple had born to them and reared nine children, seven boys and two girls, viz: Charles W., James E., Eliza J., Ignatius, Felix A., Thomas M., Mary D., Henry R., and Francis F., all of whom still live to mourn his loss. All followed him in his last of many journeys to old St. Lawrence Church, where they were all baptized and received the faith that still holds them all members of that church. Mr. Coomes was a Catholic and a Democrat, an affectionate husband, a kind father, an honest, upright and charitable neighbor, winning a circle of friends as wide as he was known. He was confined to his bed only a short time, and passed away gently when the frosts of ninety winters extinguished the fires of life. Of his nine children all are married except one son and two daughters, who remained faithful to him to the end and knew only the one home where they were born. In an old Catholic prayer book, belonging to Mr. Coomes and printed in Philadelphia by James Carey in 1800, this interesting record is carefully inscribed on the fly leaf: "Register of Ages-William Coomes was born March the 13th, 1869, Rachael Coomes was born October 9, 1775. Their children and their ages: Teresa Coomes was born September 7, 1797, Charles Coomes was born January 20, 1799, Elizabeth Coomes born October 1, 180, William Coomes, August 20, 1801, Mary Margaret Coomes born August 19, 1803, Enoch Ignatius Coomes born March 9, 1805, Charity Barbara Coomes born January 24, 1807, Felix Coomes was born November 21, 1808, Benita Coomes was born October 10, 1810, Charity Coomes was born February 8, 1813, Stephen Coomes was born October 25, 1815. This is the register of the family of Mr. Coomes' parents. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 22:31:39 -0400 From: Rita Mackin Fox Subject: KFY: OBIT: Head, 1901, Daviess Co. Submitted by Rita Mackin Fox Knottsville column of the Owensboro Messenger on Saturday, 21 Dec 1901, page 2: Mr. Walter Head, a prominent young farmer and a good citizen, was buried from St. William's church a few days ago. He is from the old Head and Montgomery families, being a cousin of Bishop Montgomery, of California. A severe case of typhoid fever carried him away. Mr. Head leaves a wife with one child, his mother, and several sisters and brothers. [Walter was the son of Joseph David Head and Margaret Modesta Montgomery. Walter's widow, Mary Jane Coomes Head, gave birth to his fifth child two months after his death. Only one of their five children survived to school-age--my grandfather, Joseph Owen Head. Mary Jane married second Charles C.
