He states that he was not in any battle during the year, that part of the time he was stationed at Fredericsburgh State of Virginia and part at Portsmouth Virginia that these Services were rendered at the commencement of the war and before the general government got their regular armies fully organized. that he was stationed a week or two at Old Williamsburgh that he went from there to Old Yorktown and soon to Portsmouth or Suffolk where he remembers to have been stationed longer than any other place during his said term of service He says he was discharged at Portsmouth at the end of the year, that he does not remember to have received a written discharge and presumes he did not, or if he did he has lost or mislaid it as he has none by him at this time and has no documentary evidence of said service That he was in the service of Virginia and understood he could not be carried out of the State during his term. He states that afterwards he enlisted as a volunteer under said Towles & Dudley before the expiration of the year said Towles & Dudley were commissioned in the regular service of the United States to best of his recollection that after the promotion of Towles & Dudley to the regular Service he was placed under other officers until his discharge aforesaid. STOUT, W. W. - STOUT, SHINDLER, VAN DYKE, McCALLISTER W. W. STOUT was born in Shelby County, Ky., in 1842, a son of D. P. Stout, of Shelby County, whose ancestors moved from New Jersey to Virginia and thence to Kentucky. D. P. was born in June, 1814, and died in 1875, at Bloomfield, Nelson County. He was a farmer by occupation, and was a member of the Legislature from Nelson County. In religion he was a Baptist. The mother of our subject was Mary A. Shindler; she was born in 1815, and is still living, a member of the Baptist Church. The Shindlers are an old family in the State, and probably came from Pennsylvania. Our subject is the eldest of four children, and the only one now living. He has followed farming and stock raising all his life, and is extensively engaged in buying and shipping stock. He owns 700 acres on the Louisville Van Dyke Mill Pike. He is a member of the Baptist Church. The mother of all the Stouts was a native of Amsterdam, Holland, so says Benedict's History of the Baptist denomination. She was here when the Indians were in the country, and was held captive by them for many years, and at one time nearly died of starvation. She was taken to a white man's cabin, and there afterward married. In 1883 our subject married Mrs. Keziah Van Dyke, widow of Elijah Van Dyke, and daughter of a Mr. McCallister. She was born in Henry County in 1841, and died July 8, 1885, a member of the Baptist Church. To them was born one child, who died in infancy. - --------------------------------------------------------------------------- This biography is included in the KY Biographies Project http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 1 Sep 1999 10:23:10 -0600 From: "Phyllis Hill" Subject: KFY: BIO: Stout, Spencer Co. 3524 SPENCER CO - STOUT, H H - Stout Bennett Carolin Cooper Collings #3534: Kentucky: A History of the State.
