   Evarts Officer Killed Friday Porter White, chief peace officer of Evarts 
died shortly after being shot Friday night after receiving two gun shots 
wounds at the hands of Burley Middleton. The shooting took place at a Gypsy 
Fortune Telling camp on the road just below Evarts depot.
   It has not been exactly determined how the trouble started, but the 
coroner's, Jury which investigated the case rendered a verdict that charged 
Middleton with murder.
   According to the inquest papers, George Davis, his wife and daughter were 
operating a fortune tent at Evarts. White was sitting nearby while Mrs Davis 
was telling the fortune of Miss Ella Farley and Howard Luster. Then a car 
drove up and three men alighted and came over to where the fortune telling 
was going on. All three were on their way to Verda,after having to get a 
radiator for a car.
   After pausing for a moment, White asked, " Where you boys from; Harlan," 
and they replied "no we're from Verda." They remained standing, waiting for 
their turn with the fortune teller. Then the shooting occurred.
   The Gypsies testified that Middleton shot White without them having any 
trouble or any words. Middleton is not much over 20 years old and White about 
30 and a cripple.

shortly after making the conveyance, leaving James M. SMITH, Joseph N. SMITH, 
Mary Margaret SMITH & Mildred Turner SMITH his only heirs, the last three 
being under the age of twenty one years and as a consequence of their 
infancy, unable to make title to JONES who asks that the court appoint a
commissioner to convey the title to JONES.

MICHAEL LYNN GIBBS - 28, of Columbus, IN, formerly of Morganfield, died on
Wed. Aug. 18, 1999 at the Regional Hospital in Columbus, IN due to a job
related accident. Survivors include his mother Kay Gibbs of Sturgis; his
father, Mike Gibbs and stepmother Jennifer Gibbs of Owensboro; one sister,
Stephanie Gibbs of Henderson; one half sister, Morgan Gibbs of Owensboro;
paternal grandmother Winona Parrish of Morganfield. Funeral services were held
Sun. Aug. 22, 1999 at the Whitsell Funeral home with burial in Pleasant Hope
Cemetery in McLean Co. Mr. Gibbs was born in Union County on June 4, 1971. He
was a 1989 graduate of Union County High School. He served four years in the
Indiana National Guard.

GORDON GIBBENS - 85 of Sturgis, died Tues. Aug. 17, 1999 at the Methodist
Hospital in Morganfield. Preceded in death by his son, Larry in 1996.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years Virginia Gibbens of Sturgis; two
daughters, Sonya Randolph of Henderson and Fay Minton of Morganfield; one
sister, Dorothy Killgore of Henderson; three grandchildren and six gr.
grandchildren. Funeral services were held Fri. Aug. 20, 1999 at Whitsell
Funeral Home in Sturgis with burial in the Grangertown Cemetery. Mr. Gibbens
was a retired coal miner and a member of UMWA. He was also a member of the
Church of God of Prophecy in Sturgis.

MARY HELEN BROWN - 76 of Kensington, MD, formerly of Morganfield, died on
Tues. Aug. 17, 1999 at the Circle Manor Home in Kensington, MD.  Preceded in
death by her parents, John H. and Georgia Brown; a brother, Bernard Brown; and a sister, Virginia Samples.  Survivors include one sister, Frances L. 
Corbett of Grayson County, KY; one brother, Charles Brown of Morganfield; 
several nieces and nephews. Services were held Fri. Aug. 20, 1999 at the St. 
Ann Catholic Church in Morganfield with burial in St. Ann Cemetery. Ms. Brown
retired from the US Department of Transportation in Washington, DC.

January 7, 1851 - March 22, 1928
Cabin Creek, Kentucky

John Wesley Osborne of Cottageville, Lewis County,
Kentucky died today after a lengthy illness and stay
in the Longview Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.  

John Wesley Osborne was born January 7, 1851 to John
Anderson Osborne and Rachel Ann Marshall. He was
preceded in death by both parents, brother Francis
Franklin, sister Agnes R. Hunt,  his wife Ida Jane
Highfield Osborne and a daughter Pearl.

He leaves to mourn him sisters, Alice Ann (Mrs Charles
Dornin) and Mary D. (Mrs. Edward Nash) and five
children.   Wesley Dimmitt and Caleb Arthur Osborne of
Cincinnati, Ohio, Carl Esten Osborne, Dry Ridge, Ky
and daughters Emma Mary and Ethel Dewey.

Place and time of burial, Highland Cemetery,
Covington, Kentucky 3/24/28

SARAH JANE (COX) BLASDEL 1864-1870  
She was a native of Kentucky, married December 9, 1845 at the age of 18 and 
accompanied her husband to Virginia City in 1861. As first lady her 
"temperance" views were observed at all social functions. The Blasdel family 
moved to California in 1891 where Mrs. Blasdel died in 1904.
