Harry Duke, after an absence of years in Salt lake City, returned to Maysville last week to attend the wedding of his brother, Basil Duke. Her brought his wife with him and both are the guests of Dr. John M. Duke. Harry is Cashier of a Bank in Salt lake, and is succeeding well. _____ A little son of Martin Grimes ran a rusty nail in his foot a few days ago and lock-jaw setting in resulted in his death on Wednesday. The funeral services took place at St. Patrick's Catholic Church on Thursday. ___ Suicide - Archibald J. Alexander, a well known citizen of Dover, committed suicide on Friday last by shooting himself through the heart with the largest sized pistol ball. He had been sick and paralyzed for many years. Vanhook and Miss Alice Gatrell., of Harrison County., Ky. _____ Died Died, near Maysville, on the morning of Saturday., June 12th, in the twenty-second year of her marriage and the forty-first of her age, Mrs. Nannie Butler Green, only daughter of the late Pierce and Eliza S. Butler, of Louisville, and the beloved wife of Thomas M. Green, of this city. ______ We regret to announce since our last issue the death of another veteran of the war of 1812, \John Ambrose Thompson, at his residence in Germantown., in this county. Mr. Thompson was born in Dauphin county., Penn., February 3, 1791 and on the breaking out of war of 1812 volunteered to re-enforce Gen. Hull, but reaching Fort Erie after Hulls, surrender, was discharged. Shortly after this he volunteered under Capt. Jas. Cochran, uncle of Robert A. Cochran., of this city., and marched to defend the shipping at Erie, Penn., and in response to a call of Co. Perry for volunteers manning to assist the fleet, again volunteered and was assigned to duty on the Caledonia., and participated in the memorable battle which gave the Americans supremacy over Lake Erie. He afterwards removed to Mason County and his been living in Germantown for several years, and at a good old age passed quietly away. ================================== June 8, 1881 Henry Morris, of the JOURNAL was married to Miss Alice N. Brown, at Millersburg, last Wednesday. The employees of this office return thansk to H. V. Morris, of the Journal, for a very liberal supply of cakes, etc. ________ Marshal Heflin will remain in Maysville for some weeks before making another raid on the moonshiners. He is no longer accompanied by Col. George W. Survived by his wife of 58 years, Earleen and a son James E., both of Titusville; four grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. Services were held Sat. Nov. 13 at the Fairmont Cemetery in Central City. WILLIAM R. BAIRD - 78 of Sturgis died Nov. 9 at Methodist Hospital in Union County. Preceded in death by his wife Millie in 198 and a sister Mary Ellen Evans in 1997. Survived by a daughter, Vicki Hall and a son, Bill, both of Sturgis; 5 brothers, Bobby and Norval, both of Sturgis, Harold of Lakeland, FL., John C. of Elizabethtown, KY.; three grandchildren, Jill, Zane and Ty, all of Sturgis. Founder of Saturn Machine and Welding Company, a WWII Veteran. Services were held Thursday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with burial in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. EDNA COLLINS - 84 of Sturgis, died Wed. Nov. 10, at Methodist Hospital in Union County. Survived by her husband Kenneth; two daughters, Janice Harris of Madisonville and Brenda Collins of Sturgis; one sister, Glenna Reynolds of Sturgis; two brothers, Bob Edmondson of Grand Island, NE; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren. Services were Friday at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis with burial in Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. (obit says two brothers, but only names one??) JOSEPH C. LUCKETT - 87 of Morganfield, died Nov. 13 at his residence. Survived by his wife Blanche; one daughter Mary Jo Steward of Morganfield; one sister Florence Meech of Boca Raton, FL; one grandchild Gregg Steward; two great grandchildren, Corbin and Tandy Steward, both of Morganfield. Mr. Luckett was a memeber of St. Ann Catholic Church in Morganfield and a member of Knights of Columbus and past president of Union Bank and Trust Co in Morganfield, and a life long farmer. Services were Monday at St. Ann Catholic Church with burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery. CELIA ANN HEDGES - 68, of Henderson, died Nov. 13,1999 at Methodist Hospital in Hendeson. Preceded in death by her parents, Jim Tom and Beatrice Buckman. Survived by one daughter, Kelly Purgeason of Reed; five sons, Thomas and Scottn Waggener, Pat, Mark, and Robbie Spaulding, all of Henderson. three sisters Georgia Smith of Louisville, OH., Mary Morris of New Lebanon, IN., and Clara O'Nan of Waverly; six brothers, James T. of Henderson, William T., John R., Charles W., Stephen W. all of Waverly and Raymond L of Morganfield, eighteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren. She was a member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Henderson. Services were held Tuesday (yesterday) at St. Peter Church in Waverly . (no burial place mentioned) MARGARET DUNCAN - 81 of Henderson, died Fri Nov. 12 at Deaconess Hospital. She was a member of Holy name of Jesus Catholic Church. Preceded in death by her husband Ray in 1973. Survived by four daughters, Bettye Ann Hubbard of Fairfield, OH, Phyllis Crafton of Henderson, Janice Cherundolo of Indianapolis, and Kathy Sturm of Miami, FL; three sisters, Lula Mae Rhodes and Martha Buckman, both of Henderson, and Mary Ellen French of Morganfield; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; nieces and nephews. BRYANT - 78 of Henderson, died Thurs. Sept. 30, 1999, at her residence. Survived by her husband of 27 years, Dewey; four daughters, Linda Greenwell of Morganfield, Brenda Whitmore of Leithchfield, Velma Gibson and Wanda Littlepage Gibson, both of Henderson; one foster daughter, Nancy Hall of Utica; one stepson, Floyd Evans of Stanley, KY; one brother, Thomas C. Sept. 27, 1999 at the Jennie Stuart Hospital in Hopkinsville, Ky. Preceded in death by his wife Flora in 1992; Survived locally by nieces and nephews. Graveside services were held Fri. Oct. 1, 1999 at the Caseyville Cemetery. Mr. Hodge was born in Saline County, IL to Mr. John H. Hodge adn Mrs. Minnie Hodge (Smith) on May 27, 1912. CHARLES GRANT SMITHERS, SR. - 78 of Cookeville, TN died on Fri. Sept 17, 1999 at the Standing Stone Health Care Center. Preceded in death by one sister, Cornelia Tynowree of New Jersey. Survived by his wife Linda; one daughter, Donna Tidwell Cross of Nashville, Tn., five sons, Grant and Shawn Smithers of Cookeville, TN., Andy Smithers of CA., Danny Martin of Cookeville and Ted Tidwell of AZ; 12 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. Services were at the Chapel of Dyer Funeral Home in Cookeville on Sept 20. Burial in Crestlawn Cemetery in Cookeville. Mr. Smithers was born in Kentucky on March 16, 1921 and a natvie of Dekoven. He was owner of Cookeville Vacuum Sales and Service. He was a member of the Baptist Faith.
