Among those who passed away during the holidays was Chastine Hood, known for years as the oldest man in the county and at the time of his death was probably the oldest man in this part of the state. There is not a reliable record of the time of his birth. According to his statement, he came from VA to this county 74 years ago and, according to his recollections, he was then age 23, which would make him age 97. Many people who knew him believed he had crossed the century line before his death and some place the number of years as high as 107. When he settled in this county his next door neighbor was 40 miles away. In his latter years he has been helpless, both in body and mind. His daughter with whom he resided has watched over him and cared for him. M. JACOB GOSSER, well known citizen of Irvin"s Store, passed peacefully away at his home. He had been in rapidly failing health for some time , though not strickley confined to bed. On account of his health , he was unable to attend the services of his church at Union for over two years, but always enjoyed the presence of his friends as they came and visited him during his sickness. MR GOSSER was a plain , unassuming citizen, cheerful in spiret, uncomplaining in adversity and uncompromising in character. He was never stong physically, but lived an active life up almost until the end of his 69 years, spending practically his entire life on the farm. "JAKE" as he was called, was a hard working man throughtout his life. He was united in marriage with MISS SARAH WILSON of this place, who has labored faithfully and sacrificially by his side throughout their journey together, whence has come a large portion of noted personages filling responsible positions of life in this community. The writer beleives this: A man on a farm with his feet in the furrows and his mind among the stars is a good place for character building. So it was with JAKE. In his home were born six children, all living but their oldest daughter. Like their parents they are considered an example and a blessing to this community. Truly the church has lost a good man. His family has lost a devoted , courageous husband and a loving and sympathetic father and companion and the neighborhood, a humble citizen. Funeral services were held at the church, Monday at 1:00 P.M. conducted by the REV. J.M. WILLIAMS. The minister was assisted by an efficient choir who sang beautifully, " Nearer My GOD To Thee" " Shall We Gather At The River" The Unclouded Day" and " GOD Be With You Till We Meet Again" H.E. PRUITT, of Jamestown had charge of the body. the beautiful casket which contained his remains, adorned with beautiful flowers, was conveyed to the local cemetery, silently and tenderly lowered into the bosom of mothe earth to await the resurrection morning.
