One Case Where It Cost to Keep Silent Campton,Ky.,Feb. 1-- Walter Dean, who was fined by the Circuit Judge $125 and given 150 hours in jail for failing to tell from whom he had purchassed whiskey, was brought into court here still refusing to testify, a jury was impaneled and he was tried for contempt of court and given a fine of $500 and 50 days in jail. He was at a former day of this court fined $420 for alleged selling of whiskey without a license. The fines and costs now against him are about $1,200. HAZEL GREEN The girls Haut et Bon Literature Society rendered a very interesting program to a large and attentive audience Saturday. The girls U. D. Literary Society rendered an interesting program Saturday evening. Mrs. G. A. Tutt of Gosneyville, visited her sister Mrs. J. B. Hollon. Miss Mattie Hall of Union Hall came in Saturday and entered H. G. A. Misses Rouse, Blankenship, Margaret Ward, and Lillie Shockey matriculated at H. G. A. Tuesday. Carl Pratt visited home folks Sunday. Miss Grace Stamper spent Saturday until Tuesday at home. J. T. Day, Misses Daisy Day and Roena Kash left Saturday to spend the remainder of the winter in Florida. Mrs. Womack, organizer of the Royal Neighbors at this place, was here Thursday to attend the installation of officers of Evergreen Camp. Charles Keyser,Sr., of Paintsville, visited his son, Chas. Jr., at the Academy recently. Mrs. H. L. Childers, of Lexie, was here Thursday night to attend Evergreen Camp. Charles Byrd, little son of Mr. and Mrs. Hollon was very sick the first part of the week. A party of young folks were entertained at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Taylor Center Saturday evening. Bro. W. D. Willoughby delivered two excellent sermons at Christian Church here Sunday. A few cases of mumps are in town, but there is not danger of more cases. James Tutt, of Gosneyville, was here Saturday and Sunday. J. B. Little, of Harriman, Tenn., who has been in ill health for some time, has been at Hot Springs Ark., for several weeks greatly improved. Marvin Carroll, of Campton, who has been attending school , is visiting home. Asa Ewing was at Campton Tuesday attending court. LOST CREEK Mize Landrum is building another boat. W. J. Landrum has moved his mill to Mill Branch, where he has a contract for sawing. G. W. Deaton is building a new storehouse near this place. Alex Haddix returned from Lexington, where he has been in school. Elisha Clemmons was here a few days ago buying ties. Edward C. Breathitt County is well represented here, among the boys from Breathitt are: W. F. Russell and W. J. Arrowood. Howard's Creek: Asher Strong, Lost Creek; Brice Cundiff, War Creek; Noah Johnson, Irvine:Alex and Granville Turner, Canoe; Thos. J. Terry, Morgan and Etta Terry, Wilson and Grover Gabbard, Jetts Creek; Ed Cox, Jackson; Zach Hurst. Grover Gabbard was in the hospital last week, but has resumed his work in school. Lowney's candies, in packages or bulk fresh each week at Haddix's. Miss Ida Riffe is ill with tonsilitis. Dr. Bert Bach, of Quicksand, was in the city Sunday. Chester Arnett, of Salt Lick, is in town this week on business. Hon. A. Floyd Byrd, of Winchester, was in the city Sunday. Chap Deaton of Crockettsville, who has been very ill, is improving. Alfred Russell is moving to his new home on River Street this week. Judge G. W. Fleenor spent Sunday with his family at Winchester. Thos. J. Strong, of Frozen was in the city this week, attending County Court. The Peoples Theatre has begun a popularity contest that promises to be of considerable interest. Mrs. J. H. Peoples, of Jonesboro, Tenn., is the guest of her daughter, Mrs. R. C. Musick, on Highland evenue. J. O. Crawford, Pierce Crawford, Jr., Hannibal Hurst and Caesar Hurst are spending a few weeks at Hot Springs, Ark. Lewis Hays, Jr. returned from Hot Springs Ark., Saturday, where he has been in the interest of his real estate business. Letter Heads from $6.oo per 1,000 down at the Times office. A number of Jackson parties have purchased the skating rink building and will install a first-class pool and billiard room with bowling alley in connection. Mrs. J. B. Thompson, who for a number of years conducted the Thompson Hotel, has sold the property and will join her husband who has a good position in Mississippi. Ruby our printers devil has been heard from. His parents are located in Henderson,Ky. Ruby says he likes the place, but didn't say whether he has a job as printers devil or not. J. D. Moore will begin pleasing the people next week by taking their pictures. He has purchased a new outfit and all sweethearts can now present their beaux with substitutes. Judge O. H. Pollard was in Lexington over Sunday, returning Monday to complete his preliminary arrangements for his canvass for the Democratic nomination for Attorney General. The TIMES was late in getting to its readers last week owing to the pntting in of new machinery. We have gotten everything rdjusted and hope to be out on time hereafter and greet friends on Friday. Andrew Russell, of Howard's Creek, brother of County Clerk Alfred Russell, is in Jackson being attended by physicians for a severe injury which he received last week to his right arm. Mr. Russell has considerable fears that his arm will have to be removed, and such news will be a source of regret to his friends. QUARTERLY COURT HELD TUESDAY The January term of the Breathitt Quarterly Court was held Tuesday and a large number of cases disposed of. Four jury trials and about twenty judgments in civil cases taken by default. The Quarterly Court has been greatly improved under Judge J. Wise Hagins, who is giving the court his closest attention and if cases were not tried when ready, or when they should be ready, they go off the docket. Judge Hagins is an experienced lawyer and this of itself is a great blessing to litigants who have cases to try. NEW GENERAL MERCHANDISE COMPANY The Ford-Sewell & Company, the new General merchants of this city filled articles of incorporation this week with county clerk Russell: The company is a consolidation of the firm of Jones & Ford and Sewell and Needham; both of which firms have been enjoying a large patronage and it is expected that the new firm will rank with the largest stores of the city, handling all kinds of general merchandise. C. S. Jones is President, W. S. Jones is Secritary & Treasurer while Hugh Needham, C. S. Jones and W. S. Sewell compose the board of directors, J. W. Ford of the Ohio Valley Tie Company is one of the leading stockholders but will not be actively engaged in the management. The Company is capitalized at $5.000.00. COMMISSIONER COMBS GETS BUSY. Street Commissioner Rodney Combs has this week begun work in earnest and has erected several sections of sidewalk in places where it has been badly needed for some time. A large number of property owners have been notified to erect walks or the town would have the work done and the charges paid by the property owner, and many of them have, so far, failed to do anything or take any steps toward laying the required walks. CHURCH NOTES Presbyterian. The Ladies Aid Society held a meeting Tuesday afternoon and re-organized. Officers elected: Mrs. J. B. McLin, President; Vice-President, Mrs. O. A. Myers; Secretary-Treasurer, Mrs. T. H. Beuris. The Sunday School had an election of officers at the Dormitory as follows: Mrs. Mike Jones, Supt; Mrs. O. A. Myers, Supt. of Primary Department; and Mrs. Sam Jett, Supt. of the Kindergarten. Other changes were made in teachers and classes. The Young Peoples Society had their monthly social at the home of Mrs. Sam Jett Friday evening. About thirty were present and passed a very pleasant evening. EDWARDS BUYS HOTEL PROPERTY Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Thompson, who for a number of years have conducted the Thompson Hotel, sold the property last week to A. B. Edwards of this city, who will establish one of the best hotels in Eastern Kentucky. Mr. Edwards says he knows how to run a genuine hotel and that he purposes to give Jackson the benefit of his experience. Amen, Uncle Alex. Chester Griffith and Robert Tallent and wife, of Elkatawa, left Sunday for Richmond to attend school. Judge W. H. Blanton fell Wednesday and slightly hurt his side and shoulder, but is out again. Mrs. Bess Callahan, of Canoe, was visiting home folkes here Monday and Tuesday. Miss Bessie Hoskins has been very ill for several days with tonsilitis.
