He was born Aug. 7, 1929, in Wayne County Monticello, Ky., where he was raised. He moved to South Amherst at age 16, living there for 13 years. He lived in Oberlin for 42 years. He worked as a quarryman at the Cleveland Quarries Co., South Amherst, as a young man, then as a maintenance man at Oberlin College. He retired from The American Ship Building of Lorain. He attended Old Fashion Grace Baptist Church, South Amherst, and Everspring Baptist Church, Amherst Township. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 28 years. He enjoyed hunting and providing ginseng roots to herb dealers. He also enjoyed walking the fields, hunting arrowheads, metal detecting and camping on the Mohican River. Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Shirley A. (nee Henes); sons James of Amherst, Douglas of West Salem and Calvin of Wellington; daughters Wanda Horning, Joyce Sanders, Yvonne Canada and Deborah Sherepita, all of Oberlin, and Linda Canada of Wellington; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother, Jessie of Bedford, Ind.; and sister, Luta New of South Amherst. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Annette Lynn Canada; parents, James and Netha (nee Carrener) Canada; a granddaughter; brothers Ernest, Al, Edward, Gilbert, Joe, Luther, Milton, Charlie and Lloyd; and sister, Lula Roberts. Friends may call Monday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, where services will be Tuesday at 1 p.m. The Revs. Farrell Keith and Irvin Jones will officiate.
