MEXICAN WAR VETRAN

Celebrated Eighty-second Birthday Tuesday June 6th

 Aaron V. HESTER, of Jamestown, a Mexican War veteran, celebrated his
eighty-second birthday Tuesday, 6 June. Uncle Aaron was born in
Kentucky
6 June 1823, and in 1834, at the age of 11, came to this state with
his
father and settled near Parkersburg, Montgomery County, where he grew
to
manhood, clearing the land of its primitive forest and enduring all
the
hardships incident to early settlers. At that time this country was
full
of wild turkey, bears, Indians and snakes and Mr. HESTER like other
young men of that day was a good shot and bagged a good deal of the
big

 26 June 1846, he enlisted in the First Regiment Indiana Volunteers
and
went to Mexico where he served one year but took no active part in any
of the battles of that war. When his company started from
Crawfordsville
to Indianapolis on their way to the war several men with teams offered
to haul them and they were three days making the trip. When they
reached
Jamestown one of the teams mired down in the road about where Rile
ABNEY
now lives and it was with much difficulty that it was pried out with
fence rails. Uncle Aaron had a number of narrow escapes while in the
service, one of which was (a) shipwreck in the Gulf of Mexico.

 He was married 14 September to Miss Sarah McDaniel and is the father
of
seven children the first and last of whom are deceased. The children
living are Mrs. Nora KIRKPATRICK, living south of Lebanon, Mrs. Amanda
CLARK of Parkersburg, and Misses Hattie, Mellie (or Mollie the print
is
not clear) and Eva. Mrs. HESTER died in 1874.

 Soon after his marriage Mr. HESTER settled in Boone County. Several
years ago he purchased a farm in Hendricks County, southwest of
Jamestown, where he lived till a few years ago when he moved to
Jamestown. When eight years of age he united with the Presbyterian
church and continued a member there of till about twenty years of age,
when he became a member of the Christian church at Jamestown.
