Survived by his wife, Helen Simpson, six daughters, Yvonne Ward of Paducah, Tami Sanders of Linden, VA, Connie Simpson of Sturgis, Regina Parker and Renee Simpson both of Henderson, Alicia Maddox of Riverside, CA; three sons, Robert, Wilbur Jr., and Johnny Ray, all of Sturgis; one sister Verna Shelton of Evansville, IN; nieces and nephews, 18 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Services were held January 2 at Phillips Chapel CME Church, burial at Presbyterian Cemetery in Sturgis. Alberta Lavern Staten, 56, of Louisville, formerly of Park City, died Dec. 28, 1999 in Princeton. She was a member of Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Park City. Preceded in death by her parents, John W. Hogan Sr. and Ollie Mae Miller Hogan; and one son Ricky Glen Reece. Survived by three dauthers, Norma Jean Greenwell of Morganfield, Sandy Sizemore of Glasgow, and Theresa Reece of Elizabethtown; two sons, Timothy Reece of Glasgow and Michael Hogan of Bowling Green; three sisters, Lucy M. Piper and Sarah A. Nelson, both of Louisville, Gladys Amarat of MA; three brothers, Roger L. Hogan and Leslie Hogan both of Louisville and Marion Hogan of Bowling Green and 9 grandchildren. Services were held on Dec. 31, 1999 at Walnut Hill Baptist Church in Park City. Wanda Rudd, 57, of Henderson died Dec. 31, 1999, at St. Mary's Medical Center in Evansville, IN. She was a member of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Uniontown and was a beautician at Bonnie Smock Beauty Shop in Morganfield for 15 years. She was also the owner and operator of Wanda's Beauty Boutique in Henderson. Survived by one son, Del Rudd of Newburgh, IN; her mother, Louise Mills of Morganfield; tow sisters, SArah Wilson of Sacramento and Vicki Green of Morganfield; five brothers, Charles, Terry, Bobby, Wayne, and Donnie Mills, all of Morganfield. Services were held Jan. 3 at Benton-Glunt Funeral Home, with burial at St. Agnes Cemetery in Uniontown. Mary Kathryn Greenwell, 86, of Morganfield, died Jan. 2, 2000 at her residence. She was born Nov. 14, 1913 to Paul and Eura Johnson. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Morganfield and was a sales clerk at Morganfield Tot Shop for numerous yers. Preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Sam Greenwell, two sisters, Marguerite Henry and Louise Jones, four brothers, Jay Johnson, Billy Johnson, Ed Johnson, & Sparky Johnson. Survived by one daughter, Sandra Greenwell of Nashville, TN; two sons, Zack Greenwell of Mt. Vernon, IL and Mickey Greenwell of Germany; one sister, Jane McKee of Marianna, FL; 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Services were Jan. 6 at First Baptist Church in Morganfield. Rev. David Bratcher and Rev. Mark Galloway officiated. Velma Holt Simpson, 87, died Jan. 1, 2000 at Methodist Hospital Union County. For over sixty years, she was a prominent area pianist, who participated widely in community and church activities. She also taught music for many years to local students. On the death of her first husband, William H. Holt Jr. in 1939, she took over the management of the family farm and continued to oversee its operations until recent years. She served as Union County's Bureau Women's Chairman in the 1940's. Mrs. Simpson was founding organist for the Sturgis Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star in 1944, and was active in the Chapter for many years. During WWII, she served as a Red Cross Gray Lady, using her music in the rehabilitation of the sick and wounded at the military hospital at Camp Breckinridge. After her marriage in 1946 to Leiter Simpson of Sturgis, she joined him at a member of the Sturgis Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Mr. Simpson preceded her in death in 1978. Survived by one daughter, Margaret Holt Chapman of Sturgis; two sons, Kenneth D. Holt of Sturgis and William J. Holt Sr. of Murray; 7 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 4 at Cumberland Presbyterian Church with burial at Pythian Ridge Cemetery in Sturgis. Pallbearers were Christopher Chapman, William J. Holt Jr., Barry Fisher, William Risinger, Scott Chapman, & Larry E. Holt. Virginia Lynch Lindle, 68, of Sturgis, died of cancer Jan. 2, 2000 at Methodist Hospital in Henderson. Mrs. Lindle was a member of First Baptist Church in Sturgis and was co-owner of Lindle Brothers Grocery Store in Sturgis. Survived by her husband, Poss Lindle, one son, Rance of Sturgis; one sister, Jean L. Kennemore of Mayfield; two nieces and 1 grandchild. Funeral was today at 11am at Whitsell Funeral Home in Sturgis, with burial in Pythian Ridge Cemetery. Darrell E. Sturm Sr, 81, of Morganfield, died Dec. 30, 1999 at Deaconess Hospital. Mr. Sturm graduated from Mt. Vernon, IN High School in 1936 & served in the Army Air Corp during WWIi. He worked for Sun Oil Co for 23 years and for Earle C. Clements Job Corps Center for 19 years, retiring in 1986. An avid sports fan, he coaced Little League Baseball for many years, where he also served as League Commissioner. Mr. Sturm was a Ky Colonel and a long time member of the Morganfield American Legion Post. Survived by his Mary A. Sturm; one daughter, Marily Sheehan of Indianapolis; two sons, Darrell E, Jr of Morganfield and Gordon of Miami, FL; two sisters, Geri Anderson of Murray and Elka Lee Shuler of Mt. Vernon, IN; one brother, Bernard Sturm of Sharpsburg, GA; 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. Services were Jan. 3, at Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield with burial at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Morganfield. Bernard "Sunshine" Willett - Rapier, 64, of Morganfield, died at his residence on Dec. 29, 1999 due to cancer. Mr. Willett-Rapier was a retired coal miner and Veteran. Survived by his wife Marry Willett; one daughter Kay Smith of Milwaukee, WI; one son, Darnell Smith of Waverly; two stepdaughters, Rhonda Moody of Evansville and Latonya Higginson of Morganfield; six step sons, Ronnie & Bruce Bell of Danville, IL, James Bell of Defiance, Oh, Mark Bell of Sturgis, Rodney & Carlos Bell of Morganfield; three sisters, Arletta Curry, Juanita Curry and Alice Houston, all of Waverly; four brothers, William Willett-Rapier Jrs of Morganfield, Raymond of Waverly and Joseph C of Louisville; a host of grandchildren and step grandchildren. Services were held Jan. 4 at Trinity Assembly of God, Morganfield with burial in City Cemetery in Uniontown. Thomas "Tom" G. Berry, 77, of Morganfield died at his residence Jan, 3. of a heart attack. Preceded in death by his first wife, Evelyn Christine Berry in 1958, two brothers, James A. Berry and Thurman L. Berry; two sisters, Pearl Berry and Lucille Rose Berry; and parents Douglas and Rose M. Berry. Dec. 1999, Union Co The Sturgis News, Sturgis, Union County, Ky, Wednesday, January 5, 2000, page 1. STURGIS WOMAN KILLED IN CRASH Services were held Monday afternoon for 21 year old Jacqueline C. "Christy" Stevens, who died in a one vehicle crash Wednesday night on KY 270, three miles southeast of Sturgis. According to KY State Police Trooper Bob Shoultz, Mrs. Stevens was driving a 1996 Monte Carlo southeast on KY 270 at an excessive speed, when she lost control of her car in a curve. The vehicle then struck a bridge guardrail and became airborne. Mrs. Stevens was ejected from the car and when it came to rest on the opposite side of a creek, the vehicle landed on top of her. She was pronounced dead at the scene by Deputy Coroner Paul Bruce at 10:15pm. Due to the extreme destruction of the vehicle, it is unknown if Mrs. Stevens was wearing a seat belt. Police said there was no alcohol involved. State police were assisted at the scene by the Sturgis Rescue Squad and Union County Ambulance Service. Survivors include her husband, Corporal David Allen Stevens, who is currently stationed in Japen; two daughters, Mallory Brooke Stevens and Alyssa Ann Stevens, both of Sturgis; her parents, Freddy and Georgia Cullen of Sturgis; two sisters, Joyce Curtis of Sturgis and Debbie Henry of Carmi, IL; four half sisters, Joann Ricketts and Sharon Hayes, both of Waverly, Martha Russelburg of Sturgis and Donna Sue Pope of Orlando, FL; two brothers, Freddy Ray Cullen and Jerry Cullen, both of Sturgis; one half brother, Ronnie Keen of Degrove, OK; nieces and nephews.
