STEPHEN CARRITHERS was born in Kentucky Jan. 29th, l8l6 and moved to Indiana with his parents at the age of seven; and in his twenty-fourth year was married to JANE GOVEN, of Caladonia, Indiana, who died one year after their marriage.  He moved to Decatur County, Iowa, in the year l853 and was married to ELIZABETH JOHNSON, June 5th, l854.  To them were born six children, three of whom are still living. He died April 6th, l895 at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 8 days.  He united with the Presbyterian Church in the year l858, of which he has ever been a true and faithful member.  MR. CARRITHERS was a man of sterling honesty, a hardworking and industrious man.  He took the side of right as he understood the right. In the liquor traffic he followed his convictions for prohibition though it necessitated withdrawal of party allegiance.  It may be of historical interest to Leon and Garden Grove Presbyterians to know that their first organization took place at MR. CARRITHER's house.  He reached a good old age, almost four score years.  He has now laid aside his pilgrim staff and been gathered to the Father's in the spirit land. The funeral service was held at the house, conducted by Rev. Gurley who spoke on Cor. l5:2l.  A large concourse attended the interment.
