''Shorty'' Hatcher, 87, of Lorain, died Thursday, Jan. 24, 2002, at New Life Hospice Residential Center, Lorain, following a brief illness. He was born July 8, 1914, in Harold, Ky., where he lived until moving to Lorain in 1952. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked for U.S. Steel, retiring in 1976 after 24 years as a pipe fitter in the No. 1 Pipe Shop. He was trustee of the No. 1 Pipe Fitter Social Club and United Steelworkers of America Local 1104. He was instrumental in bringing many people from eastern Kentucky to work at U.S. Steel in Lorain. He enjoyed growing vegetables, which he sold or gave away from the back of his pickup truck. Survivors include his son, John W. Hatcher of Vermilion; daughters Nancy Fly of Amherst and Judy Sheriff of Lorain; 12 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Gladys V. Hatcher (nee King); son, Bernard Hatcher; daughters Christine and Patty Jean Hatcher, both in infancy; parents, David and Ada (nee Taylor) Hatcher; sister, Beatrice Hatcher, in infancy; brothers Bernard B., Donald P. and Thomas S. Hatcher; and a grandson. Friends may call Sunday 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, where services will be Monday at 11 a.m. The Rev. Rick Chapman, associate pastor of Church of the Open Door, will officiate. Burial will be in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
