KY & Florida ------------------------------------------------------------ From the Advocate Messenger, Nov 23, 2001 Isabel Lewis McMakin Arends, 96, of Holly Hill, Fla., formerly of Danville, died Nov. 5 in Florida. Born in London, she was the daughter of the late James C. and Georgina Campbell Lewis. She was a real estate broker, representative of New York Life Insurance Co., office manager for Pratt Laboratories in Junction City, secretary for the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and assistant in the office of Centre College president Thomas Spragens. A graduate of Kentucky Wesleyan College, she served as chairman and member of the board of the Boyle County chapter, American Red Cross; chairman of Young-Rodes Library Campaign; president of Danville Civic Chorus; and was a member of the board of Danville Country Club and women's golf champion for eight years. She was the widow of Walter B. McMakin and C. Clifford Arends. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. John B. Knight of Dalton, Ga. and Mrs. Tom Reigel of Daytona Beach, Fla. and five grandchildren. Born March 6, 1914, in Garrard County, he was the son of the late Joe Sam and Lottie Ham Aldridge. He was the widower of Margie Aldridge. He was a World War II Navy veteran and a member of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.) Survivors include a granddaughter, Mary Charles Lumpkin of Tuscon, Ariz.; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Madeline Aldridge Foster. Born March 25, 1922, in Boyle County, she was the daughter of the late William C. and Rose Mary Clements Wethington. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Broadway, and the widow of Clyde Baker. Survivors include three daughters, Eddy Bowman and Pat Smith, both of Crab Orchard, and Mary Johns of Louisville; a sister, Elizabeth Leffew of Danville; 15 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Bobby Lee Baker; and a grandson. Pallbearers will be Brian Swinney, Chuck Leffew, Shane, Shannon and Jay Smith, and Jim Bowman. She died Saturday at Danville Centre for Health and Rehabilitation. Born Dec. 13, 1901, in Breckinridge County, she was a daughter of the late Adam and Cordia Belle Ater Basham. She was a retired seamtress and reweaver from Tweed and Carter. She was a member of Walnut Street Baptist Church in Louisville. She was the widow of Sherlay Bassett. She was predeceased by a son, Harry Bassett. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Clark of Danville; five grand- children; and five great-grandchildren. Beto, 2001, Boyle County, KY ------------------------------------------------------------ From the Danville Advocate-Messenger, 16 Nov 2001: Dr. Louis J. Beto is described by a colleague and friend as representing the highest ideals of medicine. Beto of St. Mildred's Court , who practiced medicine here for 38 years, died Wednesday at the age of 78. "I am thankful to have known and been a friend of Dr. Louis Beto. He cared deeply for his family, friends and patients," said Dr. Charles Mahaffey. "He was always cheerful and spread happiness and hope to all who had the good fortunate to have known him. As a physician, he represented the highest ideals of medicine, always giving cheerful and quality care to his patients. His family, friends, patients and those of the medical community will miss him sorely." Dr. James Ramey also recalled Beto's cheerful spirit. "He was always jovial and friendly. He had a good outlook on life." Ramey and Beto filled in for the other on obstetrical and weekend calls. Ramey estimated Beto delivered 2,000 babies. Beto also was known for playing humorous tricks on hospital employees, Ramey said. In addition to his private practice, Beto served for several years as physician at Centre College. In the early 1960's, Beto was elected to the Danville Board of Education and served as chairman. "You could always talk to Lou," said Kenneth Wall, who worked for the school system during Beto's tenure on the board. "He was always straight forward and honest. He wanted to do what was good for the school system." Wall said Beto was very congenial. "Every time you saw him he was the same way" whether it was discussing a school issue or meeting each other while walking on the track at Centre. Beto was a graduate of Univeristy of Dubuque in Iowa, and earned his medical degree form Northwestern University College of Medicine in Chicago. During World War II he was a captain in the Army and following the war he served as a physician in the Air Force. He was a board member emeritus of Farmers National Bank and had been a member of the board of elders at The Presbyterian Church. Services for Beto will be 11:30 a.m. Saturday at The Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Thomas Farmer. Burial will be in Bellevue Cemetery. Born Dec. 30, 1922, in Lena, Ill., he was a son of the late Rev. Louis H. and Margaret Witsma Beto. Survivors included his wife, Margaret Richards Beto; two daughters, Katherine Beto Jones of Nashville, Tenn., and Susan Beto Richmond of Lexington; two sons, Louis M. "Macky" Beto of Danville and Andrew R. Beto of Nashville; and 11 grandchildren. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Friday at The Presbyterian Church. Born Dec. 6, 1906, in Binghamton, N.Y., she was the daughter of the late Jenny Mumford and Albert C. Crossley. She was a member and past president of the Winnetka Garden Guild and the Kenilworth Union Church. She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Danville, the Amanda O. Rodes Book Club, and American Association of University Women. Survivors include her son, Peter Bogart of Gurnee, Ill.; three daughters, Jane Sellers and Mary Lou Jenkins, both of Cincinnati, and Betsy Grein of Herndon, Va.; eight grandchildren; and five great- grandchildren. She was a former member of Southern Avenue Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Helen Boyd and a son, Charles A. West. He also was an Army veteran of the Korean War, member of Little Zion Baptist Church in Burgin, and a church trustee. He was a member of Benevolent Lodge 3.
