Tabor Church History, Barren Co. ------------------------------------------------------------ History of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church (Barren Co., Ky.) "A Covenant of a Baptist Church on Beaver Creek entered into the 5th of November 1798. With 7 members and constituted by Elders William Hickman, Carter Tarrant, and Alexander Davidson. Agreed to be constituted on the essential doctrines of the gospel, viz: First: We believe in one only true and living God and that their are three persons in the God-head, the Father, son, and Holy Spirit. 2nd. We believe that the scriptures of the old and new Testaments, are the word of God, and the only rule of faith and practice. 3rd. We believe that we are saved by grace thro faith, and that not of ourselves it is the gift of God. 4th. We believe in the doctrine of original sin. 5th. We believe in mans impotency to recover himself from the fallen state he is in by nature. 6th. We believe that sinners are justifyed in the sight of God only by the imputed righteousness of Christ. 7th. We believe that the Saints shall persevere and never finally fall away. 8th. We believe that baptism and the Lords supper are ordinances of Jesus Christ, and that true believers and them only are the fit subjects of these ordinances, and we believe that the true mode of baptism is by immersion. 9th. We believe in the resurrection of the dead and universal judgment. 10th. We believe the punishment of the wicked will be everlasting and joys of the righteous will be eternal. Seven members went into the constitution of Beaver Creek Baptist Church (later known as Mt. Tabor). Three of the first seven members appeared to have been John Murphy, John Baugh, and William Newell. John Murphy was appointed the first clerk. He had been baptized at an early date by Isaac Barton who pastored the first Baptist Church in what is now the state of Tennessee. Brother Murphy appeared as a messenger to the Holston Association from Bent Creek Church in 1793. He moved to Kentucky and probably united with the Forks of Elkhorn Church in 1795. He later moved to Barren County, Kentucky and went into the constitution of Mt. Tabor in 1798. John Baugh, another charter member, was appointed by the church to serve in the absence of the pastor. One John Baugh was a candidate for the ministry 1790-1794 in Raeburns Creek Baptist Church of South Carolina. Also one John Baugh was in the constitution of Turkey Creek (of Saluda) Church in South Carolina on January 29, 1785. William Newell was the first to be appointed to the office of deacon. Alexander Davidson was elected the first pastor. Mr. Davidson served as pastor one year and resigned and was succeeded by Carter Tarrant. In May 1803, Jacob Lock was elected pastor and in 1804 he was regularly installed and served for the long period of thirty-eight years and was called to his reward. He was a grand man and had a powerful influence. His son, James Lock, was then called and served only a year. James Brooks, having been ordained in 1845, was called to succeed Mr. Lock, and served one year and was followed by R.T. Gardner, who served only a few months, when elder Brooks was recalled and served continuously until 1879. Shortly after the organization of Mt. Tabor a great revival swept over the land and about sixty were saved. In 1812 there were one hundred and sixty members belonging to the church. Conversions occurred very regularly at the monthly meetings, and the pastor was often engaged in baptizing converts. When the Green River Association convened with Mt. Tabor Church on the second Saturday in August 1829, the church reported 103 baptisms for that year. In reading the minutes of this church one is impressed with the strictness with which their business was conducted. Any violation of church law was at once investigated and if the member failed to make proper acknowledgement of his sin, expulsion followed quickly. Scarcely a meeting passed without some form of discipline being attended to. Men were excluded for failing to attend the meetings of the church. On the third Saturday November 1814, Joseph Martin was brought before the church for having "permitted shooting matches on his premises." He made sufficient acknowledgment and the church was satisfied. In January 1822, the following question was brought before the church. "Is it right that members of the Church should permit their infant children to attend Balls or attend dancing parties? The church answered unanimously in the negative or that it is wrong." In May 1822, the following entry was recorded: "Brother William Murphy came forward and acknowledged that he had been guilty of striking brother James Nevill three times with his walking-cane in an affray between other men. He made such acknowledgments as the Church and brother Nevill received as being upon the gospel standard . On the third Saturday in April 1823. . ."report which says that sister Rebekah Penicks is the mother of an illegitimate child and that brethren Byrd and Jameson see her on the occasion and report." At the next monthly meeting. .."The committee appointed in the case of sister Rebeckah Penicks reported that the charge against her was true, she was therefore excluded." Some other items of interest appearing in the records are: June 1800... "reed by letter... Jacob Lock." Feb. 1800..."We believe the washing of feet to be a duty." In the Spring of 1816 during a severe drought the clerk recorded the following in the minutes for the May meeting. ". . .Agreed that next Wednesday be set apart for fasting, Preaching, and prayer at this place for the purpose of imploring divine interposition in order to avert the threatning calamity of the season and to bless the land with the ordinary showers which have been withholden for about four weeks ." Time after time this old church has sent out colonies to form other churches in the Barren County area. Some of her "arms" which she extended in this region were: Beaver Dam (Edmonson County) 1803; Green River (Hart County) 1803; Boiling Springs (Hart County) 1810; Smiths Grove (Warren County) 1812; Glasgow (Barren County) 1818. This is not a complete list but it serves as a sampling of colonies sent out by the old mother church. Associational Table of Mt. Tabor Baptist Church (Barren County, Ky.)
