"Mr. Leroy Nichols died Monday of dropsy. He was about eighty years of age at the time of his death. He had lived for nearly a life time in the Vernon neighborhood in Barren County, but a few years ago his wife died of cancer. Since then he has made his home with Mr. W. I. Ward near here. He was buried Tuesday near Vernon at the Bowles burying ground." Born May 21, 1925, in Mackville, she was the daughter of the late Will and Viola Smock Smith. She was a member of Mackville Baptist Church, a member of the Kentucky Education Association and Kentucky Retired Teachers Organization in Washington County. She was the widow of George W. "Billy" Keeling. Survivors include two aunts, Edna Begley of Lexington and Virgie Isham of Indiana. Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Carey & Son Funeral Home by the Rev. David Gifford. Burial will be in Peter Cemetery. Visitation wil be 9 a.m. Saturday until service time. Mrs. Miller was born in Bernice [Clay Co], Ky., and moved to Oxford from Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1981. She was a retired beautician, a member of Wildwood Assembly of God, and a past volunteer for S.H.A.R.E. and the Wildwood Soup Kitchen. Born Nov. 17, 1918, in Lancaster, he was a 1940 graduate of Centre College where he was a member of Beta Theta Phi social fraternity. He served as second lieutenant in the National Guard and Army Air Corps and was a flight instructor and fighter pilot in the China, Burma, and Indian Theater during World War II. He later joined the Air Force Reserve and was a fighter pilot and squadron commander in the Korean War and was wing commander in the Vietnam War. He also served as commander of the U.S. Military Advisory Group in Bogota, Columbia. He retired in 1975 after being qualified to fly 45 different aircraft. He received the Legion Merit, the Distinguished Flying Cross with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Medal with six Oak Leaf Clusters, the Air Force Commendation Medal with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Vietnamese Medal of Honor (First Rank), the Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation and the Colombian Narino Order. Survivors include his wife, Glenn Shelley Rankin; three daughters, Kay Dyal of Tampa, Fla., Carol Rankin of San Antonio, Texas and Nancy Rankin of Dade City; three sons, Allan C. Rankin of Panacea, Fla., David P. Rankin of Tampa and Robert L. Rankin of Nashville, Tenn.; and 10 grandchildren. Hodges Family Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
