He died Monday at Lake Cumberland Regional Hospital in Somerset. Born March 20, 1941, in Virgie, he was the son of the late Jessie and Irene Burke Bates. He was a steel mill manager and an Army veteran of the Vietnam war. Survivors include his wife, Janice L. Bates; a son, Thomas J. Bates of San Diego, Calif.; a daughter, Lisa E. Bates of Taylor, Mich.; and a brother, Ronald L. Bates of Cookville, Tenn. Pallbearers will be Ronald Bates II, Todd Olson, Jeff Olson, Rhonda Maurer, and Andrew and Rebecca Hudson. Had gone to Morgantown Coal Fields early Tuesdaymorning, and was in the process of getting his truck loaded. After moving his truck, he got out of the truck and immediately fell to the ground, and was pronounced dead as soon as a physician arrived. A coroner rendered a verdict of death due to a heart attack.
