"Four Monroe County people were killed about 4:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, September 6, 1971, when lightning struck a barn where the four were housing tobacco. A fifth person, Miss Mary Bess Pedigo, 18, who was helping with the work, escaped injury. "The dead are James Ivan Pedigo, 40; his son, James Finley Pedigo, 16; Delson Stinson, 57, and David Holman, 17. Miss Pedigo was the daughter of James Ivan Pedigo. "According to reports, the five people were in the process of hanging two truck loads of tobacco, and only eight sticks from the second load remained when the tragedy occurred. "According to Miss Pedigo, the only witness to the tragedy, she was working on the truck, handing tobacco to Holman, who in turn was passing the tobacco on to the son, David, who was handing it to his father, James Ivan, who was passing it on to Mr. Stinson, who was working in the top of the barn. "According to information received by the News, the lightning pierced the tin roof of the barn, and simultaneously passed through the four men, dropping them in a heap near where the girl, Mary Bess, was standing. "Besides the above-named daughter, Mr. Pedigo is survived by his wife, Mrs. Sue Nelle Broughton Pedigo; two daughters, Annelle, and Rebecca, all at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ivan F. Pedigo, Route 2, Fountain Run, and one sister, Mrs. Mary Dean Pedigo of Nashville, Tenn. "Funeral services for Mr. Pedigo and his son were held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, near Holland, Ky., Wednesday afternoon, by Bro Charles Lowe, Bro. Henry Smith and Bro. Thomas Shoemake. Burial was in the church cemetery.
