His ancestors, originally from Virginia, were early settlers in Tennessee, where they lived for many years,and subsequently moved to Laurel County, KY. His parents were Jacob and Ruth (Kenner) Hackney, who had eight children, viz:William,Lilburn, Harriet, Caroline, Richard, Sarah, Jacob and Eliza. Jacob Hackney Sr., was at one time sheriff of Laurel County,and was all his life a well-to-do farmer. When about seventeen years of age, Jacob Hackney, Jr.abandoned farming as a means of livelihood, and locating in London, Laurel County, engaged in the hotel business for a few years with his father, Jacob Hackney, Sr. In 1874 he was elected jailer of the county, being re-elected in 1878, having two years previous engaged in mercantile pursuits at London with his son, Edwin H. Hackney, under the firm name of J. & E.H. Hackney. May 1, 1855, Jacob Hackney married Mary Wilson, a daughter of William H. and Sophia (Williams) Wilson, of Laurel County. To their union were born seven children, viz: Edwin H., Frances, Laura, William, Nellie, Harriet S. and an infant. Mr Hackney is a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, and in politics votes with the Democrats.
