Aaron Lucas Kills Step-daughter, Self At Colly Gap Home

A simple family quarrel ended in double tragedy Tuesday night when Aaron 
"Hawkeye" Lucas, 71, fatally shot himself in the chest alter Killing his 
stepdaughter, Joann Hayes, 22, at their home on Colly Gap of Sandlick Mountain.

Joann, daughter of Mrs. Lucas by a previous marriage to Farris Hayes, had been 
shot once in the chest by a .38 calibre pistol. The same weapon had also housed 
two shots found in Mr. Lucas' chest, Coroner Mrs. Archie Craft said in giving a 
verdict.

Lucas was reported to have shot his step-daughter during a quarrel and then shot 
himself. Mrs. Lucas said her husband and Joann had started to quarrel upon his 
entrance into the house about 8:30 Tuesday night.

Mrs. Lucas further stated that she ran from the house when Lucas got his pistol 
and shot Joann. She heard more shots from the inside when she got out of the 
house and went for neighbors, Mrs. Lucas said.

Neighbors returned with Mrs. Lucas and they found Lucas and Joann dead in the 
house. The bodies were taken to the Craft Funeral Home, Whitesburg.
