Born Feb. 15, 1923, in Stanford, he was the son of the late John and Ellen Holtzclaw Gooch. He had been owner and operator of Bob's Food Store in Lancaster for 14 years and had managed the Lancaster A&P store for 34 years. He served in the Army during World War II in the South Pacific and was the widower of Hazel Wheeler Gooch. Survivors include a sister, Johnetta Clift of Knoxville; and locally, nieces and nephews including, Jane E. Durham of Stanford, Anita C. Wilson and Gerald "Red Dog" Wheeler, both of New Salem, and Bobby R. Wheeler of Danville. Services will be 3 p.m. Tuesday at Spurlin Funeral Home by the Rev. Norman Hagley. Burial will be in Hustonville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bobby Wheeler, Larry Morgan, Dale Lemay, David Birch, Carrol Gooch, J.R. Dennis, Jerry Walls and Jerry Wheeler. Honorary pallbearers are Willie Wilson and Jackie Snow. Visitation will be 5-9 p.m. today.
