Wells Vick Samuel Baker - taken from Spencer's History of Kentucky Baptists. Samuel Baker was born in Sussex Co. England Oct. 2, 1812. He was licensed to preach in 1834. He had come to the United States in 1834 and settled in the State of Illinois. After several pastorates he was called to the church in Russellville in 1841 where he was five years. From 1846 to 1850 he served the church at hopkinsville. In 1849 he read a report on education before Bethel College. He kept on stressing the importance of having a Female High School and which resulted in the establishment of Bethel Female College in Hopkinsville. After several pastorates including Nashville, Williamsburg, N. Y., Chicago, Ill. and Evansville, Ind., he was again called to the Russellville Church in October 1872 and where he remained until Oct. 1885 when he resigned.
