Wells Vick Prof. Welborn is one of the four to whom this history is being dedicated. The following biography is largely taken from the Jan. 3rd issue of the Western Recorder (1957) and written by Mrs. Raymond H. Gorrell. Prof. Welborn was born February 22, 1869 in Muhlenberg County near Greenville, Ky.; he was one of eight children; his father, Rev. F. M. Welborn, was a Baptist minister. Prof. Welborn was and still is a great reader; his mind is very alert when almost 90 years of age. He entered Bethel College in 1890, graduating four years later. He made the teaching profession his life's work. It was while he was principal of the high school in Ridgeway, Va. that he met Miss Stella Trent whom he married in 1899. They had one daughter, Morton Rice Welborn, who married Dr. John F. Conn, who is at present an instructor in Stetson College at De Land, Fla. Among the schools in which he taught were Campbellsville and Bethel College. He was the founder of Campbellsville College, which was first known as Russell Creek Baptist Academy. It was in 1917 that Prof. and Mrs. Welborn came to Russellville where he taught until it closed its doors during the depression. He taught Latin and mathematics at Bethel College. When he returned to Russellville in 1917 he began immediately to teach in the Sunday School in the Russellville First Baptist Church, which to date makes a total of forty-one years, around thirty of which has been the Euzelian Ladies' Class. For many years he has been a deacon in his church.
