Selected Abstracts from Logan County, KY Deed Book A, 1803-1805

PLEASE READ to better understand these abstracts.

The abstracts and transcriptions were made from LDS Microfilm while 
researching several families in Logan Co, KY. They consist primarily of 
families that were of interest to me and are certainly not all the deeds in 
the deed book. Although I may have additional information about some of the 
families, I have nothing more from the deed books than you will find here - no 
need to ask. Some of the abstracts are little more than the name of the 
grantor - I just wanted to record a wife's name or make note that person was 
present at that time. It is likely I made errors, either in typing or 
interpreting poor filming or handwriting, so if you find your family, you may 
want to view the film for yourself. The Logan County deeds are rich in 
information  - your ancestor may be mentioned many times in records that I did 
not abstract. In many cases I did not abstract all the names in a document - 
although if the witnesses are listed, it's likely I did so. Dates given are 
dates of the original transaction - I may or may not have noted the date the 
deed was recorded, which is not always the same.  If the residence of the 
grantor/grantee is not stated in the abstract, it was Logan County. Personal 
comments or notes are in brackets.

Benjamin FRYE & Catherine to Micajah ROACH (Land in Nelson Co)  
 
This Indenture made the 25th day of May Eighteen hundred hundred and three 
between Benjamin FRYE and Catharine his wife of Logan County and State of 
Kentucky of the one part, and Micajah ROACH of Nelson County and said State of 
the other part Witnesseth, that for and in consideration of the Sum of Two 
thousand Dollars to them the said Benjamin and Catharine his wife in hand paid 
the receipt whereof they do hereby acknowledge and forever acquit the Said 
Micajah hath granted bargained, and sold and doth by these presents, bargain, 
sell, alien, and confirm to him the Said Micajah ROACH and his heirs forever a 
certain lott or parcel of ground lying and being in Bardstown in the Said 
County of Nelson and Bounded as follows, Towit, it being the lot ninety-four 
as in the Platt of said town and Said to contain one half acre and Bounded on 
the North by Market Street.  On the South by a ten foot alley.  On the East by 
Second Street.  And on the West by Lott number ninety three with its 
appurtenances thereunto belonging.  To have and to hold the aforesaid Lot and 
the appurtenances thereunto belonging; unto the Said Micajah ROACH to the duly 
proper use and behoof of him the said ROACH and his heirs forever and the Said 
Benjamin and Catherine his wife doth further consent to and agree with the 
Said Micajah ROACH to warrant and forever defend the aforesaid lot of ground 
with the appurtenances to him the Said Micajah ROACH and his heirs forever 
from the claims or claim of them the said Benjamin and Catharine his and her 
and every persons claiming from by or through them and their heirs.  But not 
from the claim or claims of any other person or persons whatever; nor are they 
the said Benjamin and Catherine or their heirs bound to return or account for 
any of the purchase money to the Said ROACH if the Said Lot should be claimed 
by any other person whatsoever.  In Testimony whereof we have hereunto Set our 
hand and Seals this day and date first above written.

Logan County to Wit,
I Armistead MOREHEAD Clerk to the said Court doth certify that the foregoing 
Deed from Benjamin FRYE & Catharine his Wife to Micajah ROACH was acknowledged 
to be their Act and Deed, And the Said Catherine having been examined 
privately and a part from the Said Benjamin her Husband Acknowledge that she 
did sign the Said Deed with out the threat of persuasion of her Said Husband 
and with her free and Voluntary consent whereupon the Same was Recorded.

Power of Attorney also.]
Know all men by these presents that I William HADEN of the County of Logan and 
State of Kentucky have constituted and Appropriated and by these presents do 
Constitute and appropriate John LATHAM of the said County and State afd. My 
true & Lawfull Attorney for me & in my name and Stead to Convey a certain 
tract or Parcell of Land lying and being in the aforesaid County and state of 
[something probably left out here] Seventy five acres and to the same more or 
less lying between Jonathan CLARKS Military Survey of 2000 and Jacob Barnes 
Headright of 200 acres on the black lick fork of Gaspers river Now may it be 
understood the said Latham is to Convey the aforsd Land to any person he may 
think proper and that it shall be as binding as tho I had done it myself 
sealed with my Seal & dated this 14th day of March 1803.

Hadden family living in Logan Co - unrelated to each other, although both 
families used the given names William, John, and Samuel.  The Haddens lived in 
a part that became Butler Co.  The location on the Muddy Creek indicates this 
is Hadden and not Haden.  Hadens lived on the Gasper River.]

any respect whatever relating to the Estate of Edward BREATHED Deceased of 
Washington County State of Maryland, of which Estate I am one of the Heirs To 
make deeds of all Lands Pertaining to the Said Estate Lying either in 
Pennsylvania, Maryland, or Virginia to Frances Breathed of Washington County 
State of Maryland with the sd Edward BREATHED was of right Seizen of or at 
least to as much thereof as the one Tenth part being the part of which I am 
entitled to.  Empowering Sd BREATHED to act with as full power & authority 
pertaining to the premises or any other requisite from agreement whatever that 
would be required of me as if I was personally to act myself ratifying & 
confirming whatever he may relative to the premises In writing whereof I have 
hereunto Set my hand & Seal this 14th day of August 1805.

[William BREATHITT of Logan Co did indeed have brothers named Raney, Edward, 
Francis, John, as well as James, George, and Isaac.  Their father was Isaac. 
The Breathitts in Kentucky spelled their name one way, the brothers in 
Maryland and Pennsylania most often spelled the name as BREATHED. William was 
the father of Gov. John Breathitt.]

Lincoln County State of Kentucky of the one part and William HARRISON of Logan 
County and state of the other part.  Witnesseth for and in consideration of 
the sum of Six hundred Dollars Current money by the said William HARRISON to 
me, John BAILEY in hand paid the receipt hereof he doth hereby acknowledge 
hath Given Granted Bargained and sold and by these presents give grant Bargain 
and sell unto the Said William HARRISON a certain tract or parcel of land 
Situate lying and being in the County of Logan in the aforesaid state on the 
South fork of Red River or Mauldings fork.  Beginning at a Spanish Oak on the 
bank of said fork it being the beginning Corner of Peyton NOWLINs two hundred 
acres Survey he now lives on as described in his deed and runs as follows 
towit: N26E binding on Said NOWLINs line 157 poles to a red Oak Corner Between 
said NOWLIN and Light TOWNSEN thence the Same Course .....poles  Binding on 
the Said TOWNSINs line to a stake Corner, thence East Binding on Said TOWNSON 
& Peyton NOWLINs lines to James RICE stake Corner in said Nowlins line thence 
South Eighty poles with said RICEs line to his red oak Corner thence east with 
said RICE 100 poles to his post Oak Hickory and red Oak Corner in TAYLORs old 
line thence with TAYLORs old line South to his most South East Corner thence 
West with TAYLORs line until it strikes Red River at a red oak Stump at 
Harrison Mill on the bank of said fork of red river and then Down said fork 
with its meander to the first mentioned Spanish Ock the beginning Containing 
Two hundred and Sixty One acres more or less - To have and to hold the said 
Tract or parcel of Land with Its apputenances unto the sd William HARRISON his 
heirs or assigns forever. Which sd tract of Land, I the sd John BAILEY doth 
Warrant and forever Defend against the Claim or Claims of him the said John 
BAILEY or any person Claiming under him and from the Claim of all other 
Persons whatsoever.  Witness hereof I have here unto Set my hand and Seal the 
date year first above Written.

Memorandum.  The Within mentioned Land has been Deeded by the said John BAILEY

is understood that the former Deed is to be annuled and Void and said John 
BAILEY released there from as the first Deed Was not thought Lawfull.  
Given under our hand this 15th Day of October 1805

examined private & apart from her said Husband acknowledged that She 
relinquished her right of Dower to the same With her own free and Voluntary
