When but three years old he as brought to the United States by his parents, Stephen and Ann Gibson, who settled in Clay County, Ky. At the age of nineteen or twenty he went to California, where he made considerable money in handling cattle. He returned to Kentucky and soon after married Miss Ellen V. Bates, a daughter of Dr. S. W. and Sarah (Hogan)Bates. After marriage Mr. Gibson returned to California, where he remained but one year. In 1870 he located in Somerset where he entered the mercantile business with a brother. There he superintended the building of the courthouse. In the spring of 1875 he purchased and located on 210 acres immediately south of Richmond adjoining the grounds of the Central University. This land he improved with a fine residence. Mr. Gibson started in life penniless, but by his own energy and perseverance has made life a success, accumulating and leaving a fine estate. He was an excellent and good business man and a member of the F.&A.M. Mr. and Mrs. Gibson had born to bless their union one son, John Gibson. They were members of the Christian Church. Mr. Gibson died November 29, 1884. In politics he was a Democrat.
