B. JOHNSON was born October 22, 1845, in Madison County, Ky., and is a son of William and Frances (Hooton) Johnson, to whom three sons and four daughters were born, and all raised except one son. William Johnson was born in 1811, and his wife in 1812, in Madison and Clark Counties respectively. He was a farmer; served as justice for twelve years; in religion was a Baptist and in politics a Democrat. He was a son of Maj. Johnson, who came from Virginia and settled ten miles east of Richmond. He reared a family of one son and five daughters. P. B. Johnson was reared on a farm and received a common education. At twenty-two he engaged in mercantile business at Berea, where he has been engaged ever since, and is also the possessor of 150 acres near Berea. He was united in marriage, in July, 1873, to Maggie J. Merriman, of Bloomington, Ill., a native of Garrard County, Ky., and daughter of James B. and Sophia (Henderson) Merriman, who were natives of Garrard County. Mr. Merriman was a farmer who enlisted in Col. Faulkner's regiment and was killed in the battle of Wild Cat, Ky. Mr. Johnson has had born to him three children: James B. (deceased), Joseph E. and William B. Mr. Johnson was appointed postmaster at Berea in May, 1886. He is a member of the F.&A.M., in politics he is a Democrat, and, with his wife, a member of the Presbyterian Church.
