CEMETERY: Bluegrass Army Depot Removed Graves - Cemetery A, Madison Co., KY Located on US 421 across from the entrance to the Bluegrass Army Depot. In 1942 the Army purchased 15,000 acres of land in Madison County. To build the Bluegrass Army Depot on this land, 150 plus family properties were purchased. As part of the purchase agreement, the graves of family members had to be exhumed and relocated to properties purchased for that purpose. Two cemeteries were established, one for "whites" (Cemetery A) on KY 421 and one for "colored" graves (Cemetery B) on Speedwell Road. There were a total of 901 bodies in Cemetery A. Most of those are unknown. The burials in Cemetery B will be covered in the next issue of Connections. Trustees were appointed for each cemetery and the Army gave a sum of money for upkeep of the cemeteries. In 1973 the Army notified the community that it would no longer maintain the cemetery, and since this time it has been abandoned and the graves have become overgrown. Local youths have vandalized many graves. An elderly woman who lives next to the cemetery, Mrs. Nora Leach, has planted trees and restored some of the graves in the front sections. A large number of graves are in the back section of the cemetery which is overgrown and in very poor condition. Mrs. Leach has been mowing the cemetery without compensation for a number of years. She also raises a garden in the part of the cemetery where there were no burials; however, part of the garden may have encroached on the unmarked graves in Section D. A map of the sections could not be obtained. A spokesman for the Army Depot maintains that the garden is in what was a parking lot. Before the graves were moved a preliminary survey was done of each cemetery. When the graves were moved the contractor also made a list. In this list he gave the tract number that the grave was moved from and the section and lot of the new burial place. I have combined these lists below to try to get a complete list of burials at Cemetery A. The graves with an asterisk beside them are graves that are in the mowed section of the cemetery. Most of the other graves appear to be there, but are overgrown and the tombstones have been knocked down. Name Tract Sec.
