JAMES McCLAIN. # 9254. Kentucky Militia. JAMES McCLANE. Enlisted March, 1813. Discharged May, 1813. Capt. Dudley Farris, Col. Wm. Dudley. McClain states that he "substituted at Madison County, Kentucky on or about the 29 day of March A.D. 1813". States: "Having been taken a prisoner at Dudleys defeat he was not regularly discharged but was discharged from captivity on the shore of Lake Erie near the mouth of Huron River in May, 1813." Personal witnesses to his identity: John M. Wood and Adam Knodle, 19 March, 1856. On 10 May, 1871, JAMES McCLAIN stated he was then 76 years old, a resident of Indianapolis, Indiana and that his wife's name was SALLIE CHITTY. Wife then deceased. Married wife 25 August, 1817, Lincoln County, Kentucky. Stated he was a private in company of Capt. Dudley Farris, of Col. Dudley's Regiment "on or about the 1st day of September or October, 1812 and was honorably discharged at Madison County, Kentucky on the __ day of September or Oct, 1813; that he marched from Lexington Kentucky to Fort Meigs & was captured in Dudleys defeat opposite Fort Meigs and was kept a prisoner of war until released date not known. He was injured at the time of capture by the Indians on the back & spine he was injured. He received two 80 acre land warrants the number not recollected. He received a discharge but it has been lost or destroyed." McClain's credibility attested to by Ferman Stout and Adam Knodle. ..................................... "State of Kentucky, County of Madison "On this 29th day of June A.D. one thousand eight-hundred and fifty two personally appeared before me, Police Judge for the town of Richmond State of Kentucky, JAMES McCLAIN aged 58 years, a resident of Hendricks County, and State of Indiana, who being first duly sworn declares that he is the identical JAMES McCLANE who was a private in the Company commanded by Captain Dudley Farris in the 13th Regiment of Kentucky Militia Commanded by Colonel William Dudley in the War with Great Britain declared by the United States on the 18th day of June A.D. 1812. "That Williamson Guise was drafted in Madison County, Kentucky, some time in March A.D. 1813 and that he said JAMES McCLANE was received as the substitute of said Williamson Guise and was mustered into service at Lexington, Kentucky on or about the 28th day of March A.D. 1813 for the term of six months, and that he continued in actual service in said war for until the fifth day of May A.D. 1813 when he was taken prisoner by the Enemy at Dudley's defeat opposite Fort Meigs, he was detained in Captivity for six days. that is until the 12th day of May A.D. 1813 when he was released on parole which continued somewhere about a year." Request also signed by William R. Lectcher, resident of Madison County, Kentucky who stated he served with JAMES McCLAIN, but who also states he is not interested. ..................................... 24 October, 1874, Fayette County, Kentucky. McClain made declaration for increase in pension due to disability. Stated "he is the identical JAMES McLEAN who served in Captain Dudley Farras Co Kentucky Militia in the War of 1812." Requested increase "by reason of a fracture of the lower portion of the back bone, which has materially inpaired the power of the bowels to retain their contents and renders him totally unfit for any manual labor, that said fracture is the result of a kick from an Indian on the lower part of the back bone while he was a prisoner of war at Dudleys defeat, thus his disability is total..." Supporting statement signed by John Myers and Leslie Combs, both of Lexington, Kentucky who attest to McClain's identity and credibility. Combs stated that he was also a prisoner at Dudley's defeat. McCLAIN, living in Avon, Hendricks County, Indiana, requested a pension increase, declaring: "That he was pensioned by virtue of service only. but - he was greately injured in his feet. - by hard marching & frost-bitten feet. September 28, 1850 request for Land Warrant showed veteran's address as "Hampton Post Office, Hendricks County, Indiana." Land Warrant 32.268. 80 Acres. States enlisted 29 March, 1813, discharged 28 September, 1813. ...................................... Lettter of November 27, 1875 from JAMES McCLAIN to Hon. Franklin Sanders: Respected friend. Father JAMES McCLAIN SR. was in the old Revolutionary War 3 diferent Towers and he went out in the war of 1812 and was lost in Dudley's defeat he never received a copper for his services Any assistance you can give me will be Thankfully received. Very truly yours JAMES McCLAIN ..................................... File includes a letter dated December 14, 1927 from Commissioner Winfield Scott to Hon. James G. Strong, House of Representatives which states: "This soldier stated that his father JAMES McCLAIN, SENIOR, served three tours in the Revolutionary War, and also in the War of 1812 and was lost in Dudley's Defeat, no further details of either service given.
