Allen of Johnson's Fork, Magoffin County, Kentucky was born March 29, 1848 in Morgan County. Will's grandfather Richard Allen (1797-1865) is portrayed in another biography in this section. Will grew up in the vicinity of Johnson's Fork in what is now northwest Magoffin County. Education in rural Kentucky in the 1850s was very limited but Will and his siblings received some degree of schooling based on later census responses. They may very well have been taught to read and write at home. Will and Frances “Frankie” Pugh were married in 1865 at the home of her parents Joseph and Jane (Bailey) Pugh in Magoffin Co., KY. Her father was a Baptist preacher. They were married by Will’s cousin Eli Williams. William Oney, who was married to Will’s cousin Perlina Allen, witnessed the marriage for the couple. Will was only 16, while Frankie was 17 at the time. Over the next 23 years, Will and Frankie had 10 children; William Preston, Eli (my great-grandfather), Elijah, Joseph Riley, Boone, Rhoda Elizabeth, Robert, Miranda, Minnie Lou and Noah. The 1880 Federal census shows they were living on Johnson’s Fork next door to Will’s parents Elijah and Martha. Johnson’s Fork is the main creek south of Lower White Oak Creek in Magoffin Co., KY. Elijah and William were both listed as farmers. Will's in-laws Joseph and Jane Pugh lived close by, as well as other Allen relatives. An 1880 map shows an early road followed Johnson's Fork. Today a four lane highway, the Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway, follows Johnson’s Fork in the area where they lived. By 1910 Will and Frankie were living nearby at Grape Creek. Will age 63 was working in a sawmill. Frankie died August 5, 1929 at the age of 81. Will died a couple of years later on December 28, 1931. By then he was living with his daughter Rhoda and her husband Charles Thomas “Charlie” Rudd in Morgan Co., KY. Will and Frankie are buried in Rudd Cemetery, New Cummer, KY near the intersection of Upper Grass Creek and Upper Long Branch In Morgan County.
