Biography, CONLEY, ROY HANSEL Magoffin County, Ky 2004 Submitted by: Joe Conley Joe_Conley@HMIS.ORG *********************************************************************** ROY HANSEL CONLEY Roy was the firstborn son of Jesse Franklin and Chrystal (Lemaster) Conley of Falcon. He was born on August 1, 1928 in Salyersville and the familty soon made their home in Falcon in the old John W. Conley homeplace. Roy attended the Falcon School and on his first day he walked hand in hand to school with the teacher, Fred Conley. He along with his brothers, Ray Winfred, John Henry and Challis Peyton enjoyed country living as boys did back then. One Christmas 'ol Santa Claus brought the brothers a BB Gun to share. Within a few hours of having it a window was shot and that was the end of the BB Gun. Dad spent a lot of his childhood with his grandparents, Henry " App" and Nora (Prater) Lemaster. Their son, Beecher Lemaster, was near Roy's age. Dad and his brothers spent time in the woods sledding on pine straw and also had fun tossing firecrackers on the backs of their hog. I don't believe their father would have approved! Dad says the first time he shot a rifle he was standing on a tree stump, aiming at a rabbit. When he pulled the trigger it kicked him off the tree stump! Dad was wanting to join the service. His father, jesse, would not allow it. When Dad started back to school, in his senior year at age 18 he decided he wanted no more schooling. He attempted to join the Navy and they were full. He then tried the Army and was accepted. He came home, having signed up, and informed his father the next morning. Jesse stated "no way would he be allowed to go...he was underage and Jesse refused to sign". Dad reminded his father he was age 18 now and needed no signature. when Jesse returned home that evening, Roy was gone. Dad says on the bus ride to his destination, Margie and Ishmel Caudill were on the same bus, going on their honeymoon. Beecher Lemaster had signed up for the Army as well but he had a plan. when they arrived, they were required to take a written test. Beecher dawdled and never completed the test. The instructor called him "red bird" as he was wearing a red shirt. He asked what his answers were and he answered he only got as far as writing his name! They escorted him out....which is what he wanted. He went down to the Marine recruiting center and joined there. All he wanted to begin with was a free bus ride to do so! Dad and his brothers all served in the Army, after Dad broke the ice. Dad was stationed in Anchorage, Alaska...Ray was stationed in Korea as was Challis. John Henry was in Germany. All returned unharmed. Dad ended up in Lorain, Ohio where he met and married Elizabeth "Betty" Rado and together they raised 3 children; joseph Franklin, Susan Jane and Patricia Ann. Dad worked for and retired from U S Steel in Lorain from the Outside Shipping Department. He is a longtime member of the Amherst Foursquare Gospel Church in Amherst, Ohio and enjoys Bowling, Golfing, Geneaology and his front porch and....his grandchildren. ************************************************************************* USGENWEB ARCHIVES NOTICE: These electronic pages may NOT be reproduced in any format for profit or presentation by any other organization or persons.
